Title: Arillas Today Post by: Eggy on August 08, 2007, 04:30:35 PM I have just been to Arillas and it is "Heaving". It's also Heaven, as we all know, but it was also "Heaving" today. I struggled to find a parking place.
3 pm in the afternoon and Brouklis still busy. Costas on the beach open? The first time I have seen them open at Lunchtime for a few years. Everywhere busy except the unfortunate Malibu & Coconut which were empty. But I'm sure they will get a lot of business tonight!. The beach was packed. People everywhere! I've never seen Arillas in August and, so I'm told, a lot of Italians and Greeks take their holidays at this time. Brighton beach "eat yer heart out!" It's good to see though but a bit of an eye opener for naive ole me. Always thought Arillas was so laid back having only been here May & late September. Cheers negg Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: smiffy on August 08, 2007, 04:41:58 PM Just goes to show no week or month is the same as another, its good to get these insights from you Eggy, we learn a little something nearly everyday with your posts, its fab, hope you never tire of posting!
Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: blondegirl on August 08, 2007, 04:43:49 PM I wondered if it ever got like that... Mike said would you like to be there now and I actually said No... I guessed it might be busier at this time of year what with kids off school etc. I prefer it much quieter.
Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Joe on August 08, 2007, 04:52:26 PM After last year my Mum has been dreading August, Arillas seems to get invaded by the Italians, on top of all the German and Bristish visitors it makes it very busy indeed. With a constant stream of traffic going down to and from the beach it makes walking the dogs quite a chore. I believe Italy as a acountry shuts down in August. Good for the trade but I wouldn't like it, still 1 bad month out of 12 isn't bad going.
Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Shuey on August 08, 2007, 05:47:19 PM It might not be our cup of tea going when it is busy but at least it is good for the people of Arillas!!
Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: smiffy on August 08, 2007, 05:58:25 PM Exactly, its each to their own isnt it, i too prefer the quieter month of May/June, but as you say it is good for the people of Arillas, lots of customers, means lots of 'kerching' to see them through the winter months!
Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: TerryW on August 08, 2007, 06:02:46 PM I like the subject "Arillas Today" Eggy, its like an online newspaper.
Could we have a .....wait for it.......News Eggsclusive every day please? Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: EEG on August 08, 2007, 06:13:46 PM *LOL* Smiffy! I was looking earlier at the webcam and thinking that it indeed looked rather busy.
Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: smiffy on August 08, 2007, 06:19:05 PM What made you laugh??!! Is it my way of words?!
Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: EEG on August 08, 2007, 06:20:17 PM Indeed, the eggclusive :)
Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: vivian on August 08, 2007, 06:23:17 PM You seem to have the best of both worlds Eggy, out with the crowds or at home in your lovely little quite corner. Viv
Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: James W on August 08, 2007, 10:45:00 PM On Sunday, Brighton beach was absolutely, completely, and utterly... er.....umm..... busy.
Glad we didn't go there. ;-) I sincerely hope Arillas beach never gets so crowded you cannot put a hankie down, let alone a towel. Especially the first week of September 2007 ;-) Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: kevin.g on August 08, 2007, 11:28:00 PM i love arillas any time of the year, except school holidays ,call me a prude, but ive my sentence of augusts over the years and im glad my daughter is 19 and is welcome to come away with us any time we want to go ,,,,,,,,,,,,
Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: gaye on August 09, 2007, 01:12:43 AM you've got me worried eggy. we go on the 20th hope it's not massively busy!
Thanks for your on- site reports...they are really helpful and interesting Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Joe on August 09, 2007, 11:35:49 AM Just had a text off my Mum saying that Arillas is absolutely packed, so much she has given up driving as its quicker to walk now on small journies due to how many cars are on the roads. I remember her saying the same things last year and the crowds do seem to go down as the month progresses. Can't imagine Arillas like that I always tend to go May/June and September as I don't like the extreme heat.
Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Shuey on August 09, 2007, 12:35:30 PM I should imagine the main road into Arillas is a nightmare if there is a lot of traffic up and down, especially near the coconut bar. It is bad enough in June so god knows what its like now!!
Glad im not there now!! No thinking about it i would still sooner be there than stuck here at work. ;) Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: alyvin on August 09, 2007, 05:39:04 PM When I was there last week it was very busy on the beach but I didn't notice the restaurants being that much busier at lunchtime or evening. I wonder where all the Italians go at night!
Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: blondegirl on August 09, 2007, 05:53:19 PM Perhaps they dont stay in Arillas, they might stay in another resort with predominantly Italian hotels.
Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Shuey on August 09, 2007, 06:08:56 PM When we have been up to Roda for the day there seems to be alot of Italitans there.
Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: blondegirl on August 10, 2007, 12:57:16 AM My daughter speaks Italian and when we went to Elafonisos on Crete a few years ago an Italian family plonked themselves behind us (pretty close it was) and were fairly loud. She understood everything they said and they were having a "good debate", which she proceeded to translate to us... I dont think they realised it. Very amusing!
Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Shuey on August 10, 2007, 10:52:02 AM The same happened to us when we were in Rhodes several years ago, we were on the beach and a large family plonked themselves near us. They dont seem to care that they are invading your space and they literally took over. In the end we got up and moved away.
Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: smiffy on August 10, 2007, 11:55:22 AM I myself have never understood this either, whenever i go to a beach and theres tons of room around, ill set down all my stuff and then half hour later a family will come and plonk theirselves right near us, argh so aggravating, especially when theres loads of space to choose from!
Thats why when i see the pictures of Brighton beach or Bournemouth etc in the newspaper when its been a really hot weekend, and the beach is sooo crowded, people practically lying on top of each other (oo-er!) that is my worst nightmare, how is that meant to be fun or relaxing!! But i must say in Arillas ive never had this problem, seems people like their own space as much as i do. Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Shuey on August 10, 2007, 12:04:10 PM That advert on tv comes to mind - crowded beach, new person strips off and everyone expect them to be white. I think it is a Boots advert!
Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: smiffy on August 10, 2007, 12:13:45 PM Yeah i know the one you mean, that much of a crowded beach is my worst nightmare!
Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: blondegirl on August 10, 2007, 12:18:17 PM We were in Brighton the other day and people were on the beach obviously. There is absolutely no way on earth that I would go in that water... It was brown, probably churned up sand but it was rough and horrible. They have gone "posh" though. Its about time someone came up with the idea of having white plastic sunbeds on the pebbles. £3.50 a day worth it not to have to sit on that beach. I hate Brighton though, nasty, tacky atmosphere but its our nearest coast being 1/2 hr away.
Guess where I would rather be? Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Shuey on August 10, 2007, 12:19:57 PM No haven't got a clue where would you rather be haha!! ;) me too!
Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: smiffy on August 10, 2007, 12:24:27 PM The sea is horrible here isnt it, im sure its nice and clear on some of the coast in England, Cornwall for example, but other places its just minging!
The sea in Arillas is just lovely, so clear and inviting! Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Eggy on August 11, 2007, 07:28:22 PM Saturday 11th Aug.
3 pm this afternoon, on the balcony, and felt a few small spots of rain. A few clouds above. Quickly rushed to cover up some bags of cement. And then................................................ nothing!!! 7 pm - Now currently 29 deg outside. - What's that all about?? ( Greek clouds maybe - Shall we rain now ? - Nah! lets do it tomorrow ) Arillas not as busy as the beginning of the week but still busy. Everybody busy - I think all Taverna owners are glad there's only one August each year. Happy faces all round. Negg Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Ivan on August 11, 2007, 09:01:34 PM Huh! We went to Paelo in August one year, never again ! Enough said the Italiens were quite annoying ! It was our first visit to Arillas last September, perfect for us and even our 17 year old daughter. We were outside, on the balcony from about 8.30 to 10;30 Greek time. So I reckon If it was see-able we probably just missed it. Typical. Beach is packed like yesterdays "Picture of the Day" Currently 31 deg at 4.30 pm. - No "real rain" now for at least 13 weeks. Our local fireman is obviously worried. - He's been "on call" recently. Even when I'm out cutting down bone dry weeds I don't stop for a ciggy break. (It's that dry.) This type of weather is obviously new to me. I'm told that, when the rains come they will come with a vengeance. Negg Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Lindypops on August 14, 2007, 04:34:46 PM I hope that there`s no fires etc. It would be dreadful. It`s a good idea not to smoke near all the dry stuff. It wouldn`t take much to cause a fire, I bet. So, looking at the above, I won`t need a pak a mak. Bfn.
Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Eggy on August 16, 2007, 07:17:23 PM Today's update.
A right 'ole scorcher - It's still 34 deg now at 7 pm. Arillas is busier today than the last time I posted it as "Heaving". If you arrived on a push bike you would have struggled to park. I found out where some of the Italians go in the evening. Mon Amour. I've driven past a few times around 8 ish and the cars parked outside/around. Looks like an up-market outdoor car showroom. Negg Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: gaye on August 17, 2007, 12:30:40 AM eggy that is music to my ears re weather! It is absolutely pouring down in manchester and cold! Husband has cycled to his favourite pub to hear his favourite band and will be a drowned rat ! We arrive on Monday hope that the weather will still be good...this is the latest we've ever visited.

We're showing 33 deg at the mo with a time of 6:40 pm. Even this morning with the mist at 9 ish it was still very warm. Be prepared though, because it is very, very busy. Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: smoosh on August 22, 2007, 03:05:11 PM Hope it's not too busy on 1st September when we arrive!
Can't wait now - looking forward to some well deserved sun and relaxation! :) Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Eggy on August 22, 2007, 06:50:43 PM Smoosh
Arillas beginning to gradually ease down to it's usual pace as I type. I had a choice of car parking spaces today, not many, but at least a choice. Temperature never made that prophecied 40 deg today but did touch 35. ( Oh dear - I sound like the weather man here ) I reckon by the 1st Sept life will return to a steady equilibrium. All Taverna waiters will breathe a sigh of relief and the Kitchen staff will ease back to the routines they prefer. And the beach?- When you arrive they'll be no sign of what's hit it the previous 4 weeks In my opinion September is a very good time to be here, Regards Negg Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: tracey&peter on August 22, 2007, 10:12:40 PM I agree with you there Negg, we always holiday in September when its slightly cooler - looking forward to the 10th for 2 weeks hope to meet you sometime during then and have a metaxa or two - will you be celebrating at the Wine Festival?
Tracey x Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: smoosh on August 23, 2007, 10:50:49 AM Thanks Negg! We usually go to Cyprus to stay with family in August - that's always FAR too hot! Usually about 42 most days! So we thought we'd give somewhere else a try!
We really prefer places where it's peaceful and friendly for our hols - even though we're mere chicklings (I'm 24, my other half is 21 - my younger man!) we couldn't imagine anything worse than 2 weeks in Kavos or Malia or Magaluf! I'm sure Arillas will be just what we're after! Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Eggy on August 23, 2007, 06:47:55 PM 6.30 pm folks and 37 deg outside. - Beach fairly quiet up to 11 am.
Less cars around today. I think Italian/Greek holidaymakers are on the move. SLOWLY Lindy P & Mal this morning had the pleasure of my company and, I think, spent the afternoon re-fitting the hind legs to that Donkey. Tracey&Peter - Hope I can get to that wine festival. Or Brouklis,Coconut,Malibu. (Will you bring the donkey or borrow Barrys?- Cheryls is taking a well earned rest ) I can always recognise a Forum Member now. They're the ones who dart quickly into shops or hide behind cars or jump into pools fully clothed when I approach. False beards don't fool me either, as the bikini gives the game away. Think I'll stay home for a few days and give you them all a bit of piece. - Maybe ! Negg Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Cheryl2307 on August 24, 2007, 11:06:56 AM But it's Friday, Eggy, you can't stay home!! Loads to do but how much can you squeeze in, on Greek time, well..... ( Coconut profits have gone down since you left Cheryl ) I'll let my friend know that parcel is on it's way. 32 deg here at 12.00 and risingggggggg. I can tell you it's 31 deg now at 6.30 pm. ( Not sure what it peaked at ) The beach looks good and the Tavernas a little quieter Arillas looks to be returning to normal-but still at a laid back pace. The exchange rate offered by Arkokal Travel is e1.461. - Dropped a bit. Highlight of my day ? - Lost a game of pool to a 10/11 year old lad in the Coconut. Oh! , & did a bit of business, the game of pool was better though Negg Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Maggie on August 24, 2007, 09:02:21 PM I don't think you will have time to work, Eggy, You always seem to be busy as it is!

Do I have to wear a cummerbund and dark suit? They won't look good with my grotty trainers. B.A.A eh? - baa! - Forgive me for sounding sheepish on this one. Arillas was a lot quieter today. Dimitris even "Shooed" me out of Brouklis at 3.15 because I was the last customer and he needed some prime time. It's good to see him and Litsa getting some afternoon relaxing together now the August surge is petering out. 30 deg at 7pm. Exchange still at e1.461. Are people forgetting to update it I wonder? Always ask before you change money as, the other day , one office who I cannot name put the wrong rate outside. Instead of 1.43 they put 1.34. Wonder why they got few takers????. So If you see 1.64 don't get too excited. I went back to Coconut today to pay for the drinks beceause I forgot. The girl told me you did exactly the same thing. We're an honest lot us Brits eh? Best wishes to all mate - and good hunting !! Negg Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: James W on August 27, 2007, 10:24:19 PM Not wishing to seem 'clever' Eggy, but I'd be interested to know what thermometer you use to measure the temperature in Arillas?
I am currently working in a UKAS Accredited Laboratory where we measure, and calibrate, thermometers. In the course of my work, I warm up mercury to its melting point, at one end of our scale, and cool down zinc to its freezing point at the other end. Respectively -38.8344 and 419.5270 degrees C At NPL in Teddington, I enjoyed being able to make use of the equipment. I get concerned if my 'Reference Thermometer' shows a difference of +/- 0.003 degrees C to the 'Set-Point' of the 'Stirred Liquid Baths'. I use these baths to calibrate thermometers, I create UKAS Calibration Certificates for them. I'd like to know what thermometer you use, and if it has a Certificate? ;-) If I get a chance, I'll bring a meter with a readout resolution of 0.1 degrees C next week. :-) Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Eggy on August 28, 2007, 11:10:12 AM James - not a thermometer as such and therefore probably not nearly as exciting to your clearly scientific brain!
We have something called an Oregon Scientific Wireless Weather Station which has an external sensor and an internal display. Therefore as I type this I can tell you that the weather station is stating that the atmospheric pressure is 1008mb and steady, the external temperature is 28.3 and rising and the internal temperature is 26.6 and steady. It also displays current humidity inside and outside(54% and 48% respectively), date, tme and phase of the moon. It also displays a weather forecast. I quote from the manual: "This product forecasts the next 12 to 24 hours of weather within a 30-50km radius with 70 to 75 percent accuracy". Sadly however I can report that it has frequently predicted rain during the past few weeks so that accuracy rate appears highly optimistic!! We live in hope however for the rain, whenever it comes! Hope this is of interest to you, Wendy (wife of Eggy) Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: smoosh on August 28, 2007, 11:12:10 AM Argh! Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Eggy on August 28, 2007, 12:43:12 PM Don't fret Smoosh - even if we get some rain you will also get some fantastic weather. Nothing like a good thunderstorm to clear the air!

She's done the last couple of posts. I enjoy reporting back with the "goings on". Just glad most people enjoy them. Cheers Negg And Arillas today??? - Don't know as I haven't got there yet. ( 30 deg on the balcony though, according to our Oregon Radio controller, at 2:30pm ) Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: smoosh on August 28, 2007, 02:33:19 PM Ha ha I liked the tone of that "Watch out for Wendy (wife of Eggy)" as though you should be on guard for her dubious information!!!!
Aside from her hoping it'll rain I'm sure Wendy is lovely! Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: James W on August 28, 2007, 10:51:47 PM Thank you Wendy for the information of your "Oregon Scientific Wireless Weather Station"
I know of this device, it communicates the information from the remote sensors, to the display unit. You may not be aware of it, but, the radio frequency it uses, is probably is the same as used by the wireless keyfob for your car. I used to calibrate pressure meters for use in gas monitoring systems. The calibrator indicated pressure in mBAR and psi. 1013.25 mBAR (1.01325 BAR) is the world average pressure at sea level. (Annual average) I wish I still had the equipment ;-) In addition to UKAS Temperature Calibration, I also do UKAS Humidity Calibration. Accuracy of reading (e.g. 45.37% RH) is more than adequate for most people. :-) We supply a Humidity and Temperature combination (Thermo-Hygrometer) device that we calibrate in the Lab. We also supply a UKAS Calibration Certificate for them. Time is a bit short (we're very busy right now), to get one calibrated to bring to Arillas next week, it would've been nice to check it against your readings. :-) Maybe I could post one after the holiday? You've given me a headache now. I will talk to wegg about this. She has to make an appointment sometimes to get her on the Forum and me off. ( May change my password ) Arillas today is looking good folks. - Quieter with many sighs of relief from many Taverna owners. Temperature was around 30 deg at about 3pm. (Not doing decimal points anymore Terry - You have me worried about Technology now) Enjoyed a drink with EEG, Heide, Lindy P, Mal , Sue Simcox and Roger in the Coconut. Forum takeover!!! Why don't you get Wegg her own PC. You could then both correspond to us at the same time. As a matter of interest eggy, what is your internet connection speed like? I guess that it is broadband but what are your upload and download transfer rates? I was thinking as I was driving home tonight on the M40, that it would be nice if there was an Arillas Forum notice board, probably near to where the map is in Arillas. I am sure that a lot of Arillas visitors are not aware that this forum exists and the notice board would bring it to their attention. A chap who works at the same place as me, was at the Gallini two weeks ago and he did not know anything about the forum. It was his third visit to Arillas and he is also booking again for next year. He was overjoyed at seeing the forum and was dying to get home tonight to show his wife. Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Eggy on August 29, 2007, 10:58:53 PM Terry
Whoa - I know nutink. Only that It's broadband here. - ADSL. I am very negative now with all forms of "computing" - I guess the reason is due to spending 19 years eating.living and dreaming 'em. Packed those jobs in many years ago and nowadays just happy to switch on, hope it's available, and switch off These systems/machines have now outgrown me and I'm happy to keep it that way. Bits and bytes. IBM AS400. ICL2903 - Whats left of ,what seems now, a bad dream. Each to their own I suppose. I'll mention to Dimitris about a notice board - Its an interesting point. ( I'm too old for to get any "Bytes" nowadays.) Exchange around e1.457. I was concerned Sidari rate was better but have been there today and its the same. The rate is falling a bit but then so is the "English" exchange I expect. - Stick neck out and say midweek next week back to e1.46 plus. We hit 34 deg at 5 o'clock and still rising. - Arillas looks very healthy today with most of the recent "Happy Invaders" now retreating to prepare for their next August campaign, If I was holidaying next week I would be looking forward to it with great anticipation. ( No one talks about rain anymore !!! - 1 or 2 overnight downpours would be nice ) Negg Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: James W on August 31, 2007, 12:13:48 AM Drat! Let it rain all the time until Monday 12:00, by the time we arrive it will be nice and fresh, and dry. :-) Hope the 'Stones' doesn't leak in the luggage. ;-) Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Eggy on August 31, 2007, 09:20:08 AM TerryW - I checked this morning and the internet download speed was 625 kb/s and upload 150 kb/s. Not sure how this compares generally but it is certainly quicker than the non-ADSL connection we had in darkest, rural Somerset!
Best wishes, Wendy (wife of the good looking bloke on the left!) Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: TerryW on August 31, 2007, 10:59:23 AM Thats not too bad Wendy, to say that you live in a small Corfiot village, but I guess some of the photos take a while to load.
Quote Wendy (wife of the good looking bloke on the left!) Aww .....Eggy and yourself just ooze happiness, its lovely. Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Eggy on September 01, 2007, 06:19:17 PM Update on Arillas, especially those coming out next week.
Quite a breeze on the sea front about 3.30 pm. I found I was getting sandblasted just taking a stroll. Not as many people on the beach and a few wind covers were being made ready, on most of the sea front tavernas, for tonight. A few clouds around but no rain. Still around 28 deg and certainly warm enough. I think today the sheltered "inland" free swimming pools did a bit of extra business. Exchange rate 1.459 at Arkokal Travel & Olgas Travel. Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Eggy on September 02, 2007, 09:19:42 AM Jo
"Proper" name is Neill ( 2 L's ) - Eggy is a nickname that has travelled with me for many years. "Negg" is how I sign a lot of paperwork/cheques unless it's very official then I even use part of my surname. Neill Egg is how I would sign various work E-mails and memos. All depends on how I feel at the time. ( I did have my Bank query a large cheque for cash, I handed them over the counter, because I had signed the cash card N.Eggleton but I had just scrawled "Negl" on the cheque. I had to produce other idents. So it confuses me sometime. Anyway - A fairly cool morning here at 9am. 24 deg - Quite pleasant. Cheers Mister E. Tuesday evening you'll be in a nice Taverna somewhere. Wednesday evening Thunderstorms - Not to be missed - especially a bit of lightening. ( get your camera ready ) Thursday scattered showers. Small showers clear up as quick as they come down. Question - Why If people on the beach, most of them going there to swim, immediately pack up when there's a small shower? Do they not go there to get wet anyway and the rain is a darn sight warmer than the sea. This afternoon the beach was virtually deserted yet no major breeze. No sunbeds out on the left hand side of the beach, from Marina , at all. A lovely afternoon on the beach. Maybe everyone was fooled by the reports of heavy rain etc. I do know that a lot of people were hunting around for hire cars and excursions etc to give them something to do " just in case" of bad weather. This could be why we had a very quiet Arillas this afternoon. Even hire cars were hard to come by due to demand. Maybe the weather has us all confused. ( Expect rain overnight though-my prediction!) 25 deg at 5.30 pm - Who's brave enough to make predictions, or even care about 'em? I missed James W today - He left Brouklis about 10 minutes before I arrived!. Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Eggy on September 06, 2007, 07:14:34 PM I think the two places to be in Arillas today were an inland pool/bar sheltered from the breeze or sat in the car, on the sea front, with the windows up. Temperature this morning around 15 deg and it's been raining from about 7:30 am and although still raining now at 10:20 it's brightening up a bit. ( Even heard thunder at one point ) Last night was a long shirt for me and cardigan for Mrs Egg. Next 2/3 days should see some good weather again. Warm as Sandy says but I think the 30 deg plus won't appear very much. All info as given to me by "locals" - Don't shoot the messenger. Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: TerryW on September 07, 2007, 01:54:33 PM Eggy, your posts remind me of Alistair Cooke's Letters from America, because they have a "relaxed" feel about them and they have a very unique style.
I think you should consider getting a webcam and then you could give us a proper news bulletin and weather forecast, live and online at lets say, at 6.30pm UK time everynight. What do you think? You could crunch a few pickled onions at the same time with a glass of Ouzo to make us jealous. Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Eggy on September 07, 2007, 02:34:57 PM Terry
Don't be too nice or I won't get to Arillas this afternoon due to the fact my head won't get though the door. I try and get these little updates in when I can and hope no one gets bored with them. But a webcam and proper daily "broadcast" Whoa!!! - That may start bringing me back to a scheduled life, on time appointments and 9-5's etc. Headache starting! Not feeling well! Pickled onions and Ouzo sounds good though. - But not in the same glass. Temperatures gone up another degree since last post. 23 degrees inside. Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Eggy on September 07, 2007, 07:40:20 PM Well Y'all
I can't remember the last time I stood in front of the Marina and saw a deserted right hand side of the beach. Just a few walkers, empty sea and no beds. Just a couple of people on the left hand side. Probably touched 20 deg and a little chilly. That said if you could get out of the slight breeze but stay in the sun, when the cloud wasn't hiding it, you would have had a good afternoon. But, hey, I didn't see a miserable face anywhere! Personnally If I could have taken Mal driving again this afternoon it would have been a very enjoyable time. - For me anyway! ( Tell me somebody-Why when I offer to take Mal to Agni he changes his mind by the time we get to Acharavi?? ) - Was it really too hot or did I pass those vehicles too close to that bend?? - Did that tractor bother you? and I did see that pedestrian, just wanted to see if he could jump. Shuey - Course you're all nice people. I've never met a bad one yet! ( except the couple who.......... and then......... - another story maybe. Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Eggy on September 08, 2007, 06:22:22 PM This afternoon, apart from 3/4 brave souls walking and one couple on beds, Arillas beach was deserted. A very windy afternoon.A bit chilly even but still nice.
Met James W and wife Joy for drinks in Coconut but we discreetly vanished when the Scotland v Lithuania match started. I'm sure nobody wanted us rabbiting away during a very serious game. And quite rightly so! I think we squeezed 23 deg out of the thermometer this afternoon. Maggie - Bring a jumper and a pair of warm slacks just in case. Put the odds in your favour. Bring it and don't need it and you're on a winner! Lindy P. - Maybe it wasn't a tractor. I always close my eyes when overtaking! Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Eggy on September 13, 2007, 10:00:26 AM Arillas today starts pretty well like Arillas yesterday.
A chilly morning with "dat 'ole temp" trying it's best to get up around 18 deg before we get to 9:30 am. Not much of a breeze, yet. this morning though. Yesterday afternoon did hit around 26/27 but not many people took advantage of the beach as, once again, sandblasting was the name of the game. The sea was a little choppy to say the least. A few "die hards" braving it out on sunbeds. I think they were very lucky to catch one in that wind. Generally though, another day to take advantage of the inland pools away from the draughts and enjoying the heat on offer. A cool yesterday evening but not to cold to sit outside and enjoy good food with good company. A lot of local "Arillians" noticing the drop in evening temperatures now. Noufris at Brouklis modelling a very nice sleeveless jumper in maroon but Nick still looking Mister Cool in his open neck white shirt. Dimitris has been spotted more than once in his very nice zip up cardie. Zip up Cardie?? - Probably cost more than my wardrobe. ( In the last 20 mins the temp has gone up 1.5 deg ) - Watch this space. Negg. Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: TerryW on September 13, 2007, 11:15:54 AM Its a lovely Autumn morning here in Warwickshire Eggy, sunny with the temp at 13 C as I drove to work. Just one small patch of mist on the M40.
Just the day when I wish I could stay at home and gets some outside jobs done, but unfortunately I am stuck in an office all day. I wish I was in Arillas though, wind or no wind, as it must be lovely weather now for some good walks. Finished those railings yet? TerryW Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: EEG on September 13, 2007, 11:20:23 AM Beautiful autumn morning here in London as well! Scenery is not as nice as in Arillas, but I will have to make do :)
Good job with railings! Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Eggy on September 13, 2007, 01:37:04 PM Ah the railings !! - I have just had another look at them and, mentally, they are now finished. Physically, they haven't been touched for a few days. - 1.30 pm and a breeze on the increase. - Too windy now so maybe tomorrow??
It would be quicker if I just removed them but then what could I lean on, in the evening, after a few ouzos? Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Eggy on September 14, 2007, 05:37:09 PM Dear All - just thought I should put the record straight and say that I have done some of the painting of the railings because Eggy hates doing the fiddly bits in the corners. Would hate for you all to think that I spend all day lounging on a sun bed weilding a whip while Eggy slaves away!
Mrs Egg Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Lindypops on September 14, 2007, 05:44:14 PM Nice one Mrs Egg. I think the fiddly bits get on blokes nerves, cos they have chunkier fingers. Anyway, we did visit the cocnut on an afternoon, but you weren.t there. Sorry we missed you. I had a few things to sort out when i was there, and a week just passes too fast! I hope to meet you again when i visit Arillas. (probably next year.) I hope you got your painting done eventually. Maggie.

However........ Some afternoons you just have to get away from it all and, just take a peek at what's going on in . Arillas maybe this afternoon, providing I can finish with the builders here who are now on catch up with various jobs around various properties. Jobs they fell behind on when the last few months temperatures were hovering around 30 deg. We now have to fit in with their time slots or lose them for a few more weeks. Right now it's only 19 deg here at 9:35 pm and just slightlier chilly than yesterday. I expect it will be about 25 deg about 2 ish and just right for, what is now becoming, a quieter beach and very peaceful place to be. Once the morning dew gets off these railings here I have some painting to do. -- So much work - So little time !!!! I gave up on the builders at 3 pm and went to Arillas where I found a very quiet beach with average temperature of 24 deg. - A really good afternoon. But only an exchange rate of e1.416 ??? Just for a change I shared a drink with Kes and wife in the Thalassa. Service was good. And folks - Remember you heard it here first - - ARILLAS IS GETTING OLDER!!! Probably the average age of the holiday enjoyer is now 54. Gone are nearly all those "youngies" of a 20-40 age group to be replaced by the more mature connoisseurs of Arillas. - However, how hard I try,I can only find a handful of people older than me. Life can be cruel. Negg Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Mythos & Mataxa on September 25, 2007, 01:03:17 AM Hi Eggy,

You will still be outnumbered Rugbymad. Not enough of you to control those gangs of Oldies roaming the streets at night. Anyway - You're only as old as you feel and the last few days I've met a lot of 25 year olds!!!!! Negg Mornings still a bit chilly here now. - Only 18 deg at nearly 10 a.m. - Hate to say it but our Oregon Radio Controller forecasts rain. But it's been wrong before. Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: TerryW on September 25, 2007, 11:30:55 AM All this talk of Youngies and Oldies is quite funny, I just wish I knew at what age you pass from one side to the other.
I have this vision of the Youngies walking up past the Coconut Bar and suddenly all the oldies appear coming in the opposite direction like the "Thriller Video" Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Eggy on September 25, 2007, 12:05:12 PM Terry
The age you pass from a "youngie" to an "oldie" is to do with the mind and not the condition of the body. - How you feel, as recently told me by a sympathetic person. The "eye" tells me Arillas has quite a few, very near to being, senior citizens at the moment. But the conversations with some of these "Arillas Veterans" tell me different. Oh to be 60 years old and still own a comb!!!!! There is no age discrimation here, only the occassional jest, which is all taken in good humour. Gotta go now and clean my zimmer frame. Important race this afternoon. Negg PS. Good to meet Kes and,yet again, enjoyed a good chinwag with forum members. Only 6 days to October and I hear no complaints about the weather. The sky did spit at me about 5 pm and again at 8:30 pm, in Corfu Town. The finish looks OK. We will screed and tile anyway. One guy, complete with plastic mac, was continually and patiently brushing excess water from the path and patio. For some reason they seemed to welcome the rain. They did a good job, I think, and are back tomorrow. Smiffy Yep - The machine was right for a change. So, yesterday we pay e300 for a TV aerial and Sat dish and today can't get any Sky foc channels as reception is bad. Durrrrrrr !! (Greek TV reception is very poor, unless you like to see 3 of everybody - I see 3 of everything driving home at night!!!) Arillis today? - Take a look at Dimitri's picture of the day. Tells it all. Where does everybody go? - Quiet Brouklis, deserted beach, empty Coconut and Malibu. Just a few loyal customers of Horizon. S'all I saw. Temperature battled very hard to hover at around 21 deg. Dragged Paul and Maria off the streets into Cocounut for a drink. Two very Brave people who went to Corfu Town this morning,by local bus, and loved every minute of it. Very pleased also to meet Marika, here for 3 weeks, and enjoying the day. Haven't found Joe yet - Perhaps he saw me first! (Did I really see a head peering at me from behind a stack of redundant sunbeds on the beach? Nah - I'll put that down to a vivid imagination !! ) Not having seen any serious rain since May, I took great delight in strolling along the sea front, in the rain, complete with striped brolly. How does that song go ??? - And why did any people left vanish when I sung it??? Cheers Negg Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: justlynn on September 26, 2007, 10:07:08 PM Hi Viv and Pete,
Good to meet you too. Yes, we did get booked for a fortnight from 5th May at the Bardis Sun. Apparently, Nancy popped in and told Poppy that someone had just booked, then half and hour later we turned up, and Poppy was delighted that she could tell Nancy she knew who it was! The knee is healing, thanks - it keeps itching so that should be a good sign! Colin says thanks for the nice comments. Just over 7 months to go now then! Looking forward to seeing the fireflies. Love, Lynn & Colin Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: pg32 on September 27, 2007, 11:23:48 AM Hi Negg
Didnt realise you were screeding etc aswell! How do they do the screed outthere out of interest!? Paul Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Eggy on September 27, 2007, 11:37:09 AM Something I need to find out as I am a great lover of tiling.
I'll let you know. Negg Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Maggie on September 27, 2007, 08:16:25 PM They put things on the floor to see if its level, and bring barrowloads in and pour it on. Then they use a thing to smooth it. I did watch, but I'm not very technical. ( I do remember thinking that i wouldn't like to be around when the builders take their wellies off in that heat)!!!
Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Eggy on September 28, 2007, 01:17:48 PM I'll ask the builder today how he plans to do this screed. I'm used to tiling floors inside properties, generally with a floor leveling compound on the finished concrete, prior to tiling. So bit naive on this one
Arillas Today Very pleased to see the rain has kept away and temp currently sits at 26 deg. Bit of a breeze blowing inland though and I imagine it could be blustery in Arillas. It was a very pleasant afternoon yesterday with the temp hiiting the forecasted 27 deg. Paul and Maria going home this morning. They loved there walking. It tired me out just listening to the places they got to! (Hope they put in a post about the "German in the wheelchair") Found it very amusing!) Negg Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: pg32 on September 28, 2007, 01:30:56 PM The screed i have normally dealt with here Negg is a mix of sand, fibres and cement. Wish I'd have thought of that one! PG32-Paul i hope this doesn't cost me loadsamoney. I only wanted a base for a patio and path that I could then tile on - Should have thought this one out a bit more. I can now see why the first stage of concreting is not as deep as I thought it would be. Lot to learn! Arillas today Not a day for the beach as, choppy, could be an understatement. Still a very warm day though as, once again temps of 25/26 deg have done us proud. I'd be a very happy holiday maker here today and be feeling sad to be going home in a couple of days. Had a long drink/Chat with Forum members Brian and Joan at the Horizon this afternoon who have 4 days left. I would like to hope the weather knows this and treats these last fews day with respect for them, plus other "returnees" of course. I'm beginning to love it here more and more but that's another story.. (Wegg and I even did a twinge more of the railing painting this morning !! - Very peaceful) Brouklis tonight. - Meeting Eileen and Keith. It seem the procedure here is virtually the same with about a 40mm depth and givnig that nice smoother surface to tile on. Never too old to learn. In Arillas this afternoon to find a welcoming beach but a slightly unfriendly sea. It didn't strike me as breezy but I don't think anyone told the waves that. Temperatures made around the 25 deg mark. But even the beach could not attract those supporters of Man. City and Newcastle who braved the Coconut Bar to watch the game. I think most were Newcastle supporters because I heard very little cheering each time Man City scored. Although I did see one chap raise his hand when Man City's second goal went in. ( Not sure if he'd lost 3 digits off that hand or not - Industrial accident maybe !! ) Exchange rate is poor at the mo. - only e1.41 something. At 1:30 pm today people of Arillas were being sandblasted!! A very aggressive wind! I did see 2 brave souls on sunbeds. The beach, on the right hand side looked as if the Local Kelp factory had donated all its unwanted stock to Arillas. Those waves must of been working hard all night to build those nice little piles of the stuff. That's nature for you. No respect for those on, or just about to have, a well earned break. But hey, it's nearly October. we all take the "ruff with smooth" and inland the temp got to around 25 deg. Another day around a pool - and why not?? If I make a comment about jodphurs you'll only go on to whips so I'll keep quiet. Arillas Today at 3 pm found a very relaxed beach, just a little kelp, together with a temp of about 25 deg and a sea with very gentle waves. I nearly went down there to sample the sun and the tranquility it advertised. - However, i only take my clothes off for money nowadays so went to the Coconut Bar instead. (They insist I pay for alcohol,there-Taking my clothes off is not an option) Lovely chat with "Hels Bels Duo" At 6 pm the beach and sea still had that same invite and people were still taking advantage of it. Yer know, tomorrow I may take a towel and a cossie and give up drinking - ( Just for the afternoon ) Arillas - Still a great place to be in - AND NOW IT'S OCTOBER !! I'm told this morning was an excellant time for the 10 ish early birds who tend to fly off by midday for a few grubs. A well behaved sea and people taking advantage of it. This afternoon saw a continuation of this morning but a few less people on beds. The sea looks so inviting even to a water hater like me. There are still a lot of people around enjoying a pretty good start to October The Coconut was where I wanted to be this afternoon though, as 4 hours in Corfu Town does play on the stress levels. ( After 9 am everything moves so quickly there. Even the escalator in Marks & Spencer seemed to be at double speed ) Had a good chat with Helen & Keith ( Hels Bels ). Well Helen really 'cause Keith was involved in a Jackie Chan film. I did tell him, in advance, of who gets killed. I'm very helpful like that. Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Eggy on October 03, 2007, 06:35:06 PM Well our Viv. - That 20 deg sneaked up to around 25 deg today.
Arillas beach looked gorgeous this afternoon but only 14 people, i counted, on the beach and one in the sea, which was so well behaved it deserved more that one person taking advantage of it. It's a much quieter Arillas now and, yes it has got a bit older. Remember the german with his motorised wheelchair? Add to that the senior guy, this afternoon ,who walked past me with his pedometer on the end of a long stick. - What's that all about? ( I've never taken a stick for a walk before- Wonder if he's given it a name ? ) Coconut and Malibu both empty this afternoon but Horizon blessed with the company of a few people, including Marika, and "Hels Bels" who, having provided the donkey I, very happily, proceeded to talk the legs off. I'm told this morning, around that 10 ish time the beach was a little busier, but I missed that. - So where does every body go in the afternoon?????? Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Eggy on October 04, 2007, 06:37:33 PM Sandy
Around that 25 deg again today and I think tomorrow should be a good start to your holiday. I think rain is forecast for overnight tomorrow but, info volunteered by those in the know, says maybe Saturday. Wegg strolled to the beach lunchtime with her parents and everything looked "hunky dory" - I spent a very nice 90 mins plus in the company of Frank ( Corfusoon ) and family at Helios Court Villa so didn't view the beach until 5:30. Few people left by then and no one in the water? - To me it looked a very good time to get down there and sample what others have left behind. I'm getting worried more and more every day now with this weather. Combined with the beach and peaceful sea it looks so inviting I'm afraid that, one afternoon, I'll take a towel and cozzie to Arillas instead of money for an Ouzo !! - ( I got 'eadache now thinking about it! ) Stay Well All Negg Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Jo Wissett on October 05, 2007, 12:08:10 PM Hi Eggy
What do the in-laws think of Arillas then? Perhaps they will want a 'granny flat' adding onto your house?! Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Eggy on October 05, 2007, 12:21:43 PM Jo
They love it! - Or so they tell us. They're off exploring today. Agious Spiridon, Kassiopi. I hope I can be that sprightly when I'm 76 years old !! Granny flat out of the question - But I may sell them some land !!! It's a very nice day here again. Started a bit chilly on 17 deg, but I think we feel the cold a bit more having acclimatised. Now it's 24 deg at just gone 12am. I'm pleased for Sandy, Joyce and Alex and all who arrive today. It's a good start to a break. but I'm a little concerned for them, about rain Saturday and Sunday. Let's hope it's overnight and doesn't interfere too much with their holiday. Garden needs an excess of water though. Cheers Negg Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Eggy on October 05, 2007, 07:42:01 PM Reading Diane's, SBG's, recent post on "Withdrawal Symptons" makes me feel a little guilty about an "Arillas Today" update.
But only a lttle guilty, so here goes. Temps went from 24 deg lunchtime up to, about 26 deg at 5 pm when Arillas beach looked nearly deserted. Where is everybody to take advantage of yet another fine day? Harold and Sally had the answer and pointed out that the naturist end was still busy even at the end of the day. So, taking clothes off to take advantage of this weather wins hands down. The 5pm score reads. - Textiles 7 - Naturists 35. (Only an approx figure for naturists. I didn't like to go down there & physically count) One question though - Would a naturist. wanting a quieter beach, be willing to wear something skimpy to take advantage of the near deserted textile end? Anyway - Arillas is generally winding down. Thetis Hotel have now emptied their pool and Mathraki has closed. Coconut may stay open until 17th so I imagine what they do the Malibu will follow. Efthia Taverna will stay open as long as they have customers, but generally, most will close by the 17th. Unless Dimitris @ Brouklis knows different !!!! I don't think the rain, which was forecast overnight , will happen. So , Happy Holidays Sandy, Joyce, Alex & co, Mythos & Metaxa and all. i asked Harold this afternoon and he said:- "Yes - I would consider moving to a quieter textile beach providing there were no discarded "dog ends" around." (That idea of tables, complete with ashtrays, by the sundbeds is a very good idea.) Arillas this morning about 11 pm was a delight. Just a little cloudy with a sea just over the gentle side and a quiet beach, yet again. Temperatures hit about 25/26 deg , however,I'm using Kavvadades here as a guide. Coconut and Malibu doing a very good trade down to a Man United football game and an England rugby match. 5 pm and all still looking good. Rain has been forecast for the next 3 days but, then again it was forecast for last night. Didn't happen - Greek Rain maybe - Avrio!! Happy birthday to Keith ( Hels Bels ) and thanks from Wegg & Negg for a very delightful "Coconut Chinwag" with you both. Apologies to Harold for just leaving as he turned up. - Next time sounds good to me! - Now who does he look like ??? Probably long enough to put another Ouzo away. -- Good answer though. Negg Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Eggy on October 07, 2007, 11:12:39 AM 20 minutes non violent rain this morning at about 10 a.m. and now we've got a very civilised 22 deg at eleven.

Cornwall is brilliant but arillas is heaven. Tell you what eggy, when we get there in june if you havent done all your jobs i will give you a hand if you want im not a builder but for some reason i dont mind painting! yammas all. Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Eggy on October 07, 2007, 04:29:01 PM Hi Steven
Cornwall was, and still is, is a great favourite of mine. Get the weather right and you do get a cracker of a holiday. ( I May save you some painting, in the house, for June 08 ) We've had 3 showers here today, Last one about 3 pm, and although breezy, still have a temp of 25deg. Very lazy day today and never got to Arillas but I imagine very similar conditions there, as in Kavvadades. Rain is forecast again but versatile Arillas Holidaymakers will treat it, with as much nuisance, as a fly on an Elephants bum. They will enjoy the break and adapt accordinly. Cheers Negg Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Lindypops on October 07, 2007, 04:53:44 PM Hey Eggy, I`ll bet there`s an afternoon service at the Coconut!
Title: Re: Arillas Today Post by: Eggy on October 07, 2007, 04:58:29 PM Lindy P
By "Service" do you mean it's Sunday and If I had got to the Coconut would Peri and Costas be wearing dog collars. And ...... would they bless every Ouzo I drank. .... Now it's getting silly !! .... Temps dropped 2 deg in the space of 50 minutes. It may be a chilly evening plus the chanc of rain. Whoa!!
