It was all the cigarette butts lying around the beach that I thought was awful.

I believe that it is a requirement of the contract for beach concessions (sun beds etc) that the operators keep "their patch" of the beach clean of rubbish discarded by us untidy tourists. Certainly in Agios Georgios that is the case.

So in the end it is we, the tourists, who pay for it in the price of the sun beds which is as it should be.

I thought that might be the case.  Makes sense!

Does this mean the beach is now 'Non Smoking' to add to the cleanliness and health for all to enjoy?

We always are careful to take only photographs, and leave nothing but footprints.  :-)

Smoking is allowed on the beach, there are ashtrays on the tables for the cigarettes to be distinguished.

Is this Pedros or Spiros? Every day I saw this gentleman he was always smiling.

This is Pedros. He has a lovely smile  but he is very protective of his beach. We once saw him giving a Greek family a telling off for taking cobbles off the beach up near the Gratziella

We saw the beach being raked and the girls (one of them was Jagorda from the galini) were brushing the sun beds, this was the last block of studios just before the cliff path.  Perhaps each "carer" of sun beds look after their own patch.  Jagorda is going out with Tom the blonde guy who looks after them to the right of the jetty.

i dunno about arillas, but when i went to san steph beach lsast year there was a little man raking the sand, also a digger loading seaweeded sand into a lorry, interesting about jagorda:she must've dumped kostas as they were disappearing eveery 30 mons last year at the galini !

I know, when we stayed at the Galini it was the same.  We met her with Tom and she told us they are getting married and wont be back next year.  I think it has been too quiet up there for her this year.

Does Pedros operate a sunbed and parasol hire franchise, on a particular part of the beach?

If so, then keeping the area clean is normally part of the contract.

We certainly never have the attitude of "If it's his job to clean it, we'll give him some reason to clean up, by littering"

We'll no doubt see him when we come in September 2007  :-)

Yes, Pedros works the beach to the left of the jetty. He keeps it clean, raking and removing rubbish, he always has a big smile and welcome for us.

When we were there at the end of June there was a lot of seaweed to the left of the jetty, a tractor could be seen most days digging the seaweed away. One day, there was a strongish wind in the opposite direction, the seaweed was washed away completely and didn't return!  The sea also turned much colder but, with ambient temperatures of over 40C it didn't matter!
