speaking greek
« on: September 02, 2007, 09:26:44 PM »
been trying to learn Greek, past the kali mera, ti kanis stage for over thirty years. just discovered new CD course called Earworms - you repeat with a music background - ghastly but seems to work. How about Greek lessons  once a week for an evening at some nice little place near the beach during the summer season/ venue could change each week as could time of day- any volunteers? Been to Arillas for past six or seven years and will be back next summer - love it!!

Great idea. We have been to Greece at least seven times but find it a tricky language to learn.

Good job I saw this post before I set off.

Nearly forgot to pack my Greek Phrase Book & Dictionary.  :-)

Or did I leave it in Kos back in June?  ;-)

The knowledge of English that most Greeks have makes it a lot harder to learn Greek.
With the best will in the world I can prepare myself to speak greek and then as soon as the conversation switches to English I still breathe a sigh of relief.
I get by here, albeit badly. I'm told the best way to learn the language is at the end of the season. Stay in Corfu from November to April when English is rarely used and you sink or swim. I'll let you know May 2008 how I got on.
Hats off though to anybody making that extra effort.

I've just about learnt the Greek alphabet but that' all!  (Well, apart from the kalimera, afharisto etc. that most people probably know.  Also know one to ten but don't think that will be much help!

I would love to learn to speak greek. When I'm there this month, I'm going to make a suggestion to a friend, and who knows, we may be able to do wee bits every holiday. I think it may take a while tho!lol.

My friend who has lived in Crete for 4 years, her daughter married a Greek, she still has trouble with the language and she lives with it 24/7.  During the winter months they do a "Greek School" so they can catch up when its quieter.  I understand you know when you have cracked learning the language when you start dreaming in the language.

I would love the learn abit of Greek but it looks so complicated.

At work i receive alot of emails from Chinese/Thai and Japanese - well all languages really, luckily they all are in English apart from the French who i find quite ignorant - but anyway what i was going to say is that Chinese writing just looks like little drawings.  I just dont get it atall!!

Hi everyone haven't been on in a while (had probs with internet!!!!!)
I found a great CD rom last year in a local store called Learn Greek by Euro Talk interactive which is quite good if anyone sees it in a shop. I think it was only £8.99.
Also last year the star did a one day greek cd course in two parts which i found very helpful.
But a Greek class in arillas would be great fun and i think that we could learn more actually
being there.

Only 4 weeks to go!!!!
