Magical day on the waves
« on: July 20, 2008, 07:44:18 PM »
Hi all, after my rants about the state of the Arillas Bay I want to get down to the best side of Arillas and report on what we found great.

We hired a simple 10hp (steering stick) boat (Olga) from the San Stef boat hire people, but could have done the same from the beach at Arillas. For the day it cost us 70 euros (10am till 6pm). It was dropped off for us at the beach at Arillas and we were given the 5 minute guide (anyone can do it) and we were off. They come with sun canopy and all you need. We went all the way down to paleokastritsa, by far the best way to go to for bays, coves etc. We stopped, swam, snorkelled and had a picnic on the boat with wine (think its allowed).

We then headed up north all the way up to Sidari and on the way back down we stopped at the island off the beach at Arillas. The side facing Arillas actually has a tiny beach and the water is deep and clear, wonderful to swim to it and look back at Arillas from the shore. On our return we were measured for fuel, expecting to pay 40 euros and ended up paying 28. The small engine was fine and it really could skip across the waves a quite a speed when you wanted or when cutting out a bathing beach (must avoid swimmers). The boat took 4 people so breaking it down that way it was not expensive at all. One word of caution. If you anchor offshore and go for a swim, you either need to be quite strong to haul yourself back in using the tiny fold away steps at the back or have someone in the boat to lend a hand.

Its a terrific day out and will give you wonderful photo opertunities along the way. Makes you feel like a king (or queen) of the sea.
