Just a couple of Questions
« on: March 03, 2005, 11:46:59 AM »
Hi

Visiting Arillas for the first time in the near future and i have a couple of quick questions.

Cash, is it easy to get hold of some in Arillas, is there a cash machine, should i take travelers cheques or euros.

Are there any maps of the area as i intend to hire a car for my 2nd week.

Its that long since i've been to Greece i can't remember what the cost of living is like. Does anyone have any price comparisons for me so i can figure out how much cash i may need.

Whats Aqualand like, we would like to go for the day during our stay.

Can't help about the ATMs but I understand that there is at least one place where you can get money exchanged.  You often find that you get a much better rate in Greece than in the UK, so some people choose to take sterling and change up whatever they need there.

You'll probably get a map supplied with your hire car - if not, you should ask for one.  There will probably also be some available in the supermarkets.

As for prices, the following was posted on another website on 16th Feb so it should be fairly reliable:

This is a guide for the current prices for ranges of items around Corfu (Prices in Euros)

At the Supermarket

Aspirin - 0.70
Beer - 0.65
Bottled water - 0.50 a litre
Bottled Wine - 3.00 - 6.00 a bottle, depending on quality (excluding highest quality)
Bread - 0.60 (small), 1.30 (large)
Butter - 2.35
Chewing Gum 0.60 a pack
Cigarettes - 2.50 a pack
Coca Cola - 0.65 can
Contraceptives - 2.80 for a pack of 4
Crisps - 0.85
Deodorant - 2.05
Disposable Razors - 2.05 for 5
Film - 3.85 for 24 exp.
Milk - 1.10
Shampoo - 3.70
Shaving Cream - 2.95
Sun Tan Lotion - 5.30
Tampons - 2.85 for 16
Toothpaste - 2.30
Yoghurt - 0.75 (plain), 1.30 (fruit)

In Bars and Restaurants

Capuccino/Espresso - 3.50
Beer - 2.50
Chicken - 4.40
Cocktails - 4.40-7.35
Coffee - 2.00
French Fries - 1.50
Greek Salad - 4.50
Kalamari - 6.00 - 7.00
Pasta - 4.00 - 6.00
Souvlaki Pita - 1.40
Souvlaki - 4.20
Steak - 7.00 - 10.00
Taramosalata - 3.00
Tzatziki - 3.00
Vegetable dishes - 3.00
Wine (home made) - 4.50 a litre
Dinner for 2 in a taverna - about 30.00 euros with wine

Nick,

Sidari is the nearest town with ATM's, at the very most a 15mins drive.
As Stuart says, you will be able to exchange cash/travellers cheques in Arillas.

The road maps of Corfu are notoriosly awful, although it can be fun getting lost and 'finding' little gems of villages. :D
If you want a decent map, your best to buy one before you go.  After reading a few recommendations I bought mine from http://www.hellenicbookservice.com/travel/ionian.htm   it cost £4.95+p&p and was published "with the co-operation of the Hellenic Army Geographical Sevice".
I have another map specifically for N.W Corfu which came with a walking guide book, I will look it out for further details when I get home this evening.  I remember being quite impressed with the local details on this map.

Eating out in Arillas is very reasonable, if on a budget you can buy a 3 course meal for 7 euros!  For a quick no-fuss meal Stekis Grill is very inexpensive with HUGE helpings. :D

'Sorry I cannot help with your Aqualand query.
Eileen.

Sorry, I missed your Aqualand question.  I've not been myself but the website is:
http://www.aqualand-corfu.com/index2.htm

There are some comments about Aqualand on the Agni Forum at:

Good Luck

Hello Nick,

I looked out my other map and I've been sitting here in work looking at it dreaming of the walks I would like to do.
It came with a guide book to walks in the Aghios Georgious area, the walks include Afionas and Arillas therefore the map shows these areas. You wanted a road map of Corfu and the one I mentioned in my previous post is the business, but the walking map really has good detail and a better understanding of the layout of the local area.  If it is offroad adventure you want then the unsurfaced roads are indicated too.
Unfortunately it looks like you have to purchase the guide book to get a copy of the map, but it is not expensive (£7.95 incl p&p).  Here is a link to the site:  http://www.marengowalks.com/Corfu_bk.html

'Hope this helps,

Eileen.

Hi Nick,

Auqaland is great for all the family. Its a very big place and there is something to suit everybody. As for cash machines the nearest is Sidari. There are two there which I always use.Others have been right in saying that Arillas has a very good exchange rate.I usually change a bit up at the airport for my taxi from Corfu airport and change the rest of my English money up in Arillas.

Hope this helps

Last year we went to Aqualand to celebrate our friends 50th birthday. 9 of us went and we all had a great time. [ages varying from 16 to 50] .
The pools and water slides suit anyone, dependent on your confidence or bravery in water. 8)  Take a picnic with you tho, cos the food there can be expensive, and its really only burgers and hot dogs. Bottled water is 1euro. Have fun. Maggie :D

Go to Annas car hire near the fast food shop in the middle of the village, you'll get a good deal including a map - but don't expect accuracy from it, it will get you near where you want to go.Anna will also change your money, I always take sterling, good exchange rate and no ATM charges which can be high. Cannot vouch for Aqualand but Sidari is only about 20 - 30 mins away (3mins 27 seconds if you get a lift with Leon from Armourada) from Arillas and both are well signposted.
Drivings fun out there, say no more!

we have hired a car several times, and the fun was every road we took no matter what direction we went in we ended up back in sirdari, it was so funny heading in different directions from arillas, and ended up driving back through sirdari. so dont worry you wont get lost. i have come to the conclusion every road ends up there. alex
