Stream De-Activated
« on: March 04, 2010, 11:26:51 PM »
For weeks now I have been unable to access the webcam with the message that the owner needs to logon and the stream is de-activated. Have assumed I would wait for Dimitris to fix it when he had time. Was never going to push it, after all it is his time off.

I've been missing it though.

Others have commented on the webcam images since, so now I don't know what is going on. Can you help please Dimitris?

Phil

The live stream has been inactive for quite a few months. The live stream needs to be hosted and to get it hosted you have to pay or be plagued with adverts. If I remember correctly the webcam was hosted on a different site, just over a year ago, but you had to view adverts before seeing the live stream.

Maybe Dimitris is looking for another site to host it or maybe the second webcam, that did the live streaming, could be out of action. I think I can remember seeing a webcam on the tiles of the Horizon as seen from the other webcam during one of the storms.

Dimitris is always striving to improve the website, at his own cost and time, and we may get more additions and surprises in the next few months. I am still amazed by his dedication to this forum and website. A lot  of equipment is required to beam the signal from the Horizon, across the village to a server or PC, and then to get the stream transferred to a hosting site for us to view it.

I went out on to the roof at the Horizon last year and this is the equipment that beams the signal across the village.

Finally Akis came by  yesterday to sort out my networking architecture so that I can be able to run my own webcam server and you can view the arillas webcam live as much as this is possible with the means that we use.

you can now test it here http://www.arillas.com/page/en/live-view-test/
let me know if you have any problems by reporting it with replies to this thread.

Wish me good luck with this...

Dimitris

Thanks, Dimitris

It works fine although doesn't seem as clear as it used to be. Maybe Eggy could climb up and give it a clean.

I have also added the link, with a 1 second refresh rate, .........

............to my Google Home page and it looks good.

You are spoiling us again :-)

Geoffrey,

I add that link to my Google home page - do a search for " Igoogle" and you will see what I mean. There are many apps available. I also have local traffic cams.

You can add any webcam you like, and get movement.

Everytime I do a search my home page looks like this

Igoogle and such applications are good but concerning live web cams especially ours,
we have to be less "greedy" with the bandwidth that such  system would need to run.

Terry you must remember that the Upload Bandwidth that I;m using for the live streaming is not higher than 256kb/s.

If a webcam image is   43kb then we can only have maximum 5 viewers watching simultaneously.
Therefore I have set the refresh rate to 1fps (frame per second) which would increase the number of viewers depending on the average time they spend on the live cam.
soon it will be possible to upgrade my connection to a little higher speeds but it will always be a problem for multiple viewers.

I;m trying to find a way to stop viewers from leaving permanetly their browser's window  open in order to have a live view when ever they like. or for those who would leave their pc on for ever with the live cam always on.

there must be some ways that I’m going to investigate …
untill then...
stay tunned!!!
