Torpedo in the vilage of Magoulades
« on: October 16, 2014, 04:08:13 PM »
Hi
I read on another thread people asking the origin of the torpedo in the village so far from the sea .
My information is that in the village is a guy, aged about 55 yrs of age, who is disabled, having only one leg.
This disability came about when some 15 years, when the gentleman was undertaking some bomb disposal activities. Not sure where, but somewhere in the Aegean.
The village erected the torpedo in recognition of his efforts and bravery.
As the guy still lives in the village it should not be to difficult to locate him and ask him of his exploits.

Excellent Geoff and thanks for that info.

I have been trying to find out about that torpedo since it came up in a recent post.

Various explanations from a small group of people.

1. Washed up on the shore and rescued to Magoulades, which , at that time was a prolific fishing Village.
2. Got caught up in fishing nets one day and "ferried" back.
3. Origin is supposed to be German. - No one seems to be sure if it is still "live"
(Don't bang it with yer shoe Viv !!)

But.... what ever way it got there, I would love to think that your research is the one to accept.
Any Village here is a close group of friends and this is the sort of gesture they would make.

Cheers
Negg

Having been through the village many times i have also tried ti find when and where the torpedo came from, there is an inscribed plate on the torpedo but this only deepens the mystery.
The inscription shows the torpedo was of German origin and built in Keil but the date is unusual - it says 1964 which makes it impossible to be a weapon from the Second World War.

Hi
I was not told where the torpedo came from only that is was put on display in recognition of the guy who lost his leg some 15 years ago whilst undertaking bomb disposal work.
As I suggested it should  not be difficult to locate this guy in the village and seek more info.

I hope to pluck up a tad of courage and find this guy, in Magoulades. ( I have all Winter)

And..... to be fair, the courage I have to pluck up does not even come near to the courage this guy must have had and probably still retains!

Thanks again Geoff for the info.

Hi
I have asked my informant why the village chose this particular torpedo and where did they get it from.
As soon as I hear I will let you know.
