Looking forward to first time in Arillas
« on: April 15, 2015, 10:41:07 PM »
Thinking ahead though only 6 weeks or thereabouts before we arrive. Not only first in Arillas but first for Corfu. Thinking of suitable plans for the week so any suggestions welcomed. We like walking but also have a hire car so getting about is not a problem either. We will need some time to just relax too.

Oh boy, Bumpkin. So much for you to take in. Soak up the laid back Arillas atmosphere, and appreciate what it is about. Visit Afionas village, just up the hill and be amazed at how pretty a village can be made. Head for San Stefanos but stop off at Gravia Bar and Akrotiri to soak in the views.

It all depends - in one week it is impossible to appreciate it all. It takes a lifetime. Be sure what you want to see and do, then ask us and we will try and tell you how.
Phil

Hi Bumpkin,

Paleokastritsa is great. Fantastic views :-) There are hour long glass bottom boat trips, one where you stay on the boat and another where you get to jump off for a swim in the sea. I couldn't decide, so i did both :D There's also an Aquarium there plus lots of lovely places to eat & drink. The beaches are quite small but there are plenty of them - i would definitely recommend visiting Paleo

I have been on lots of the excursions so could recommend many more but a lot of them require leaving the island. If you're hiring a car and/or walking, i'd say just set off and see where the day takes you :-)

A few years ago, we eventually persuaded some friends of ours to go to Arillas, along with their two young children. I say 'persuade because whilst 'Mum' and the kids were keen, 'Dad' wasn't. He's the kind of chap who always has to be doing something, and previous holidays had always been 'activity' holidays, and the idea of a beach holiday just didn't appeal at all. So I listed some of the possible activities available:
           land-based - hire a car/quad bikes/scooters/push bikes
                            - run/jog/walk around the beautiful hills and olive groves
                            - horse riding
                            - day on the beach
                            - day by the pool
                            - eat/drink/socialise
                            - excursions
                     etc

            water-based - hire a boat/pedalo/jet ski
                               - swimming/snorkelling/scuba-diving
                               - para-gliding/wind-surfing
                     etc.

and finished by saying "if you get bored in Arillas, it's your own fault!".

When they got back, he said it was the best holiday he'd ever had.
I asked what had they got up to, and to my amazement, he said "Virtually nothing."
His wife said that after the first couple of days, he was so chilled that he was content to just relax on the beach or by the pool.

         Result.

Now, they have one 'activity' holiday, and one 'beach' holiday ( - usually Arillas) every year.

Thanks angiem. Some nice relaxing activities on your list. I quite like snorkelling - is that any good from Arillas beaches?

The snorkelling is not great in Arillas but there are some nice bays nearby that I'm sure people will let you know about.  As for being hilly Arillas is very flat and great for those that are less able-bodied.

Arillas is very good for exploring on foot, good paths and a signposted walking trail but leaving the village you will encounter a few hills.
Some of them like the walk to Afionas are quite steep but still doable if you have the stamina😀

The walk along the cliffs to San Stef is well worth it and quite easy just don't do it in flip flops! It's stoney!
Two very nice bars for drinks or food for you to visit as well, You can walk back down the roads to Arillas, it takes longer than the cliff route but you will see more of the area.

There are local places to hire bikes if you prefer to get about a bit quicker. Never done it but someone will have the info if you ask.

The love affair continues.

Like Val says - Arillas itself not hilly but if you want to leave Arillas on foot and not walk the long way around then I am afraid it is rather hilly to walk over to Afionas or San Stefanos. All down hill on way back though which is good. The views from one of the tavernas in Afionas or from the cliff tops on way to San Stefanos are worth the climb though.
