Retsina and gyros

My first try of gyros and they were delicious; a perfect little parcel of lamb or chicken with chips and salad. I went to Beach Point a few times for a quick snack and we'd scoot over to San Stephanos to Iannis's (main street) for his gyros too.

One new drink I gave a try to this year was retsina. it wasn't to my taste at all. It was too resiny flavoured for me. After one little sip I renamed it ratsina - at least I gave it go though. Next year I'm going try ouzo, although it reminds of Pernod which I was really poorly with one night as a teenager and haven't touched a drop of anything aniseedy since. Is ouzo like Pernod?

Cypress I can totally imagine your night with Pernod, because I had the same experience 😨 haven't touched it since either, lol. I have tried Ouzo in Arillas and it's lovely, didn't give me the pernod horrors!

As far as I know, the French often take their Pernod as an aperitif, before the meal. Ouzo can probably be drunk 24/7, but my favourite anise-flavoured liqueur, Italian Sambuca, is often served as a digestivo. It is softer and sweeter than the others, but just as strong.
   Sambuca is often served neat, with a few coffee beans. In Italy I was told that there should be three beans, for faith, hope and charity.
   We returned from Arillas a week ago, and have fond memories of late night Sambucas in the Horizon bar, where Marinos, Mikey and Michalis served this wonderful drink after first having set it on fire!

I don't like the resiny flavour either cypress. Many I know love it, but not me. I like ouzo neat, nothing in it at all. Very different to when it turns cloudy with water or lemonade added. But I like it both ways. Yes, it is just like Pernod, and packs a serious hangover if you have too many.... I sometimes (often?) have too many Mythos, but never too many ouzos.

Gyros are fine, but with my limited appetite I save myself for bigger and better - when I am in Arillas there are so many choices of wonderful food, and Gyros just sit near the bottom of the list....

Looking forward to next summer - maybe we can share some more new things on table 13?? Can't wait!

I love gyros. Especially from Beachpoint and eaten on the beach with the cap top bottle of Retsina. Yum. As for ouzo, I also have it s an aperitif with lemonade but the traditional way is with water. I know someone this year who loved ouzo wit the Corfu ginger beer.

Xristos at Beach Point provides a fabulous service, Gyros that everyone agrees are superb, cheap beer and seafront views. No wonder we spend many hours there, in and out of the season. Another
wonderful place to go in Arillas.

Retsina and Sprite is a drink seen quite often now. Agree with Sonia on the Ouzo n Ginger Beer.
Also agree with the Beach Point Gyros. (Beach Point should be open in the Winter - Fri-Sat-Sun evening for food - every day for a drink)

In fact, I seem to be agreeing with everything today - Must be the weather.
