Title: Mathraki Appts
Post by: Rick@Annie on June 08, 2011, 08:59:47 AM
Does anybody no if mathraki supply a hairdryer in the rooms?

Sorry no hairdryers at Mathraki. Also take a hairdryer with a long lead or a hand mirror,  as the plug is too far away from the dressing table.

Thanks for that Val. These things are handy to know. Ive taken a hairdryer with me on holiday before to find one in the bathroom. How did you find your stay at Matharaki? We have heard nothing but good reports and really looking forward to going there. We have been to Arillas before,2 years ago and stayed at the Dionyssis.

I took a hairdryer and straighteners last year but didn't bother with either of them - hair dried naturally within half an hour!  Just pinned hair up with a clip if I was too hot!  Definitely not bothering to take either this year when we return.....

Mathraki apts are lovely, clean, good value and oh so friendly.....  Never, ever returned to the same place twice before, but just couldn't stay away!

Hi Rick@Annie    the Mathraki is a lovely place to stay, the rooms are all the same size and the kitchens are well equipped ( if you want to use it), fridge with icebox, 2 rings oven and grill, everything you need, teapot, electric kettle, salt and pepper, egg cups even tea towels plus all the usual crockery. Large wardrobe with drawers under and a couple of small drawers. We also had two kitchen stools I think all the rooms do, but we always have the same room so not sure.

The food at the bar is excellent and good value too, large English breakfast with eggs from their own hens, orange juice tea toast n jam,  4 euros ...... a good variety of meals served all day and evening.

The best thing about the Mathraki is the wonderful family that run it, nothing is too much trouble.

The pool area is kept nice and there are plenty of sunbeds and being adults only it's quiet.

You will have a great holiday.

We left on Monday after a very restful time.

             Val x

Both Val57 and Valnbill were there at the same time last year!!
(missed you and your daughter this time Val57)

Ah Val - we'll be back!  Just have to fall in with the school summer holidays in Leics due to work!  Wish we could go earlier though - bit too hot for me in July/August.....  We arrive on 19th July, God willing....  (Hmm - not told hubby yet!)

Are you back at Makris in July?  Or have I got the months wrong?  Lee, (Daughter) and I enjoyed a week there in 2009 - first time we had ever been to Arillas and just loved it!  Correction - I've been to Arillas previously in 2004, walked over from San Stephanos, must say I prefer Arillas!!  (Times 100!)

Looking forward to seeing all of you at sometime during July!

Val - we really enjoyed our stay at Makris, we had one of the apartments that was set back from the others,  so was very quiet.  Also, we enjoyed going to Helen's Taverna which was not far away from Makris - couldn't walk that far last year due to problems with my back unfortunately.....  But hopefully, we will manage to get back there this year - it really is a superb place to eat and very friendly!

Oh - 5 weeks Monday until we go - can't wait!

Hi Val, I remember you talking about your holiday when we met you last year but didn't realize that it was the Makris you stayed at.

Thanks for the info about Helens we past it while walking last week and intended to go but went to Thomas's (fish) instead,  had a really good night but never got back to Helens.

Mathraki is wonderful have stayed there 3 times, clean and hospitable, but as anywhere in Corfu I believe no frills...so hairdryer, iron loo paper after first two rolls you provide those yourself...also if you want true comfort take your own pillow...just returned from 2 weeks in Arillas paradise cannot wait to return, but only thing that would have made it better...a feather pillow...pack that and cut down on the clothes...whatever u decide to pack as holiday wardrobe, look at it and then quarter it...add a tube of handwash liquid and pck yr iron, do yr washing as you boil the kettle for first cuppa and peg it out on yr bungee and pegs that you hve packed....dry in an hr! Enjoy!

Even Norfolk rural folk can do the modern lingo Georgia luvver so it seems... Us yokels in Somerset make a reet mess of that.

Loved your report on Mathraki - well it agreed with my view as a visitor. Haven't stayed there yet but probably will. An ideal location for those who want to ogle Georgios who has taken over the supermarket that his old dad used to run. I detect a forum feeding frenzy happening already....

Moi? I am just like you - waiting to be home again. I love holidays, but I love being there even more.

Hope to meet you there one day soon.  You Jen and me could compare notes on life, sheep and everything....

When we were in Arillas 2 years ago Helens Taverna had just opened we were one of the first there for breakfast and then had a meal there every other night. The food was always lovely and Christos, wife and kids were really hospitable, cant wait to go back to see them.

Rick n Annie

Helens is a nice place to be and such a good family. It's on our list of favourite visits and Christos is very passionate about what he cooks and how he cooks it.

So many places to visit and so little time. - It's the same for us here.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mathraki is such a good spot to be in and also a super family. Akis is the whizzkid computer genius son who, quite often corrects any technical stuff that I get wrong.

Neill mate, I read rick and annies post a while ago. I read them all in truth. I didn't reply because I already hog it on here. I agree with your every word. (Nothing new there then.)

Mathraki is just great, and Helens, on the way to Vavilas, is new and also just great. Many have agreed with that. A wonderful addition to our Arillas choices.

We would definitely come back to mathraki, we felt really bad as the first couple of days all we seemed to do was break things, but they were brill and now its a joke to see what we will break next. Nikos and atis are great guys, the apartments are clean and quite well equipped for greek self catering, we have been to places where there are only 2 rings and a fridge. the pool area is great even is the paving does get really hot you just jump in and cool your Feet off!

Hi Hels Bels,   We just love the Mathraki, in fact Bills sister is there with you now, their names are Sandy and Arthur, so just shout out their names and say Valnbill send their love.
They are Arillas virgins and  have text us to say they love it, they arrived Friday night..... we gave them a map and they have already been lost twice while out walking!!

Give Nikos and family our good wishes, and enjoy the rest of your holiday, many thanks for passing on our message........

No charge for sunbeds at Mathraki, but they should charge for the wonderful hospitality, Nikos and family are simply great.
The welcome you receive is priceless.

Just returned after 2 weeks in the Mathraki Appts.
What can you say. With hosts Nico and Akti you will want for nothing.
Nothing is to much trouble.
Throughout it is clean and tidy.
Our second visit and already looking forward to our 3rd next year

We are thinking of booking for Mathraki but we are scratching our heads to exactly where they are. We stayed at Kalloudas last year and thought we had memorised where all apartments were but even looking at google map with it marked and studying all photos we still can't work out where they are I feel sure someone will be able to enlighten us.

head up the main road ,turn left at amourada, heading towards san steph ,,as you go up the hill its the first turning on the left,to which if you follow that road it brings you out on the beach at the road next to effis yiammas,,x

Pipped to the post, Kev!

I was just going to tell them that if they came out of Kaloudis and took the first left after Efi's and followed the road round, past the smallholding with the chickens and turkeys, past the Thetis hotel, and round the bend again they would come across Mathraki on the right hand side just before the T junction....

Indigo648 - if you follow this link (if it works for me...!!) it will show you, but it's basically not far from all the "action" (??) of Arillas:

What nobody has said is that the Mathraki is only about 3-4mins from the centre of Arillas. We love it there, it is so quite, there being no children allowed, I love to see kids enjoying their holiday but peace and quiet when you want it is also valuable to us.

having just read post by Janis giving location directions of Mathraki has left me yearning for Arillas, the walk between Kaloudis and to Mathraki is one of my favourite walks, just for the joy of it always stop and chat to the chickens, they always respond! Got up at 6am on our last visit in May and walked to St George before the day hotted up, that was amazing, but could hardly walk the next day..not big on hills here in Norfolk, and our poor old bodies suffered for it, 10yrs ago would have been a breeze..ish!!! x

You are right that is a lovely walk. One of the many unexpected plesures we found when we first came to Arillas was the great walks and sharing the experiences of others so that you can always try new ones.We walk first thing when it is not too hot!
Your post already makes us look forward to next July when we return.

What are the beds like? We stayed at the Dionysos 2 last June and the beds were rock hard.
It spoilt what would have been a great holiday as the rest of the complex was very good.

Stayed at the Mathraki a few times, the first time Bill found the beds hard, but last June he was sure that Nic had replaced the mattresses,
he hadn't, Bill had just got acustomed to them. Think he was using Tony's method though! ;)

Hello to everyone, first time posting so go easy on me !

Just had to add a comment about the Mathraki, visited Arillas for the first time last year and stayed at these wonderful apartments, could'nt fault it. When we arrived we enquired about the shower not having a hook on the wall, Nic said that he would see what he could do, off we went down to the supermarket to stock up on a few essentials and returned an hour later only to find that a shower hook had been fitted !! This set the tone for our two week holiday, nothing was too much trouble, a very helpful and extremely friendly family (inlcuding the dog)

From the tasty breakfasts to relaxing around the pool to sitting on the balcony watching the sunsets to the the late night drink at the bar we had a fantastic time, so much so that i have booked in myself, partner and six of our friends for a week in early May to celebrate my big five-o !

Just like to say that i think you all do a great job promoting this beautiful part of Greece, we love the Greek islands but last years visit (after reading about it here) was our favorite so far - roll on May !!

Nic and family are lovely, never ever 'in your face' but always there for you, and as you said, nothing is too much trouble.
