Title: local clay of Arillas
Post by: dimitris on June 23, 2004, 07:02:50 PM
Arillas in North West Corfu has a special charisma. The beach hills consist of a kind of clay that is normally used for local pottery goods.
A lot of people paint their body green with the local clay of Arillas.
As it dries on your body, it gives a smooth surface to the skin.
Actually it is nothing less than these body and face masks provided by most healing clubs all over the world.
I have seen some ladies taking some clay stones with them while leaving the naturist section of the Arillas beach which is on the very left and very right part of the beach.
In some places in the world like France they even drink it as powder mixed in water for medicinal use.
Soon I will have a full article about the clay of Arillas in our web site.
See you,

yi all
i have used the mud at the nudist beach and i must say apart from looking a complete *$%£ i does seem to purify the skin also if you are starting to burn it cools the skin down and stops you from getting sore.
maybe i will see you soon

The mud clay is especially good if you have burnt your skin and you don't want to subject the skin to anymore sun - just cover the burnt bits and carry on!   Its cool.

Hi all, We {12 of us} went to the beach to cover ourselves with the mud this summer when we visited. It was great fun and ous skin felt great afterwards. We plastered it on and waited for it to dry, and then went in the sea to get it all off again. There were quite a few others doing this as well as us. I could show you the photos, but I'm not goin to!   Try it next visit everyone. :D

Title: Mud is fun
Post by: Anonymous on September 26, 2004, 11:32:41 PM
Hello everyone... the mud is FUN. Barrels of fun, especially if you are two or more persons and paint each other from head to toenails...

I hope placing the image works as I expect it... :-) it shows my girlfriend & me making wild faces - notice how you can model your hair when its "mud-enhanced" (the picture was taken last year):

The perfect mud recipe: take a plastic bag to the beach, collect some of the mud and crush it (it is very soft stone), then fill the bag with a little bit of sea water & let it "ripe" in the sun for an hour or so. Then crush the remaining mud pieces & fill with sea water until you have a smooth paste, and the wild painting can begin. Its so much fun, you have to try it at least once.

I've seen people adding olive oil to their mud mixture, but I really do NOT like this, after all you're going to wash the mud off in the sea and then the oil is in the sea, which is not very nice. :-(

And Dimitri is right: after you washed off the dried mud, the skin is really very soft & smooth, feels very nice - in other places, people pay a lot of money for that! :-O But take care of mud remainders in your ears & elsewhere ;-) ...it makes really nasty stains in your towels! :-D

Greetings from cold & grey Germany... :-(
Alexander.

Post by: Anonymous on September 27, 2004, 02:22:00 PM
Addition: be sure to pick the "pure" green clay-stones... you'll recognize it on your way towards the naturist beach... (there's some claystone cliffs you pass) ...that gives the smoothest mud-paste. :-D

Greetings,
Alexander.

Hello Aline,

We would all love to be there to see the beautiful views for ourselves  I bet your rain is a lot warmer than ours

I love Afionas and go up there quite a lot when on holiday, last monday we had a lovely breakfast in the Panorama and the sun was shining, unlike the Saturday when it rained, rained, rained

  Perhaps you could start a 'daily column' just like a journalist with little snippets on Arillas to keep me and the other forum members happy throughout the winter until we return to Arillas next year. :D  :D  :D

Hi, it seem's we had been waiting for ever to try it out and it was worth it all, we had a great time painting each other and then baking in the sun, we could feel our skin tighterning up as the clay dried  and yes the skin did feel softer once we washed it off, which if im honest did surprise me a bit as I did feel that perhaps these claim's had been excaduated. We had lovely weather all week and you wouldn't have thought it was October we did the mud thing twice and spent the rest of the time just getting the ray's and chilling out. Wonderfull. The clay does a good job on your skin, leaves it feeling as soft as a babies bum, however as it has exfoliant, (hope i spelt that right lol), properties i recommend only using it on the first or second day as you will lose about one days tan ....and thats what most are here for, see you 5th June 06

have to admit, we have photos of me b******k naked covered in green mud. It was spread over me by a quite attractive German woman, amongst a large party on Arillas beach. No difficulty - Jen was sat watching - it wasn't about that either. But when I collected the pictures from Safeways the assistant said "you're quite well off..." and you can work out what you think she meant - I don't think she meant that!!!!

Just love the way topics suddenly come to life after being dormant for ages.  This one had no posts for 18 months.
Enjoyed watching a large party of Germans this year covering themselves in the green mud.  Will take some pics next time, but was unsure of the etiquette, perhaps its OK so long as I don't take them to Tesco for printing.

We missed out on it this year. Spent far too long getting rat ar**d watching darts in Rainbow, or the film in the Nut.  Loved it all though. We had so much fun... Our Arillas comes with both.

I did get greened up one day though. It was very windy. No pictures (you're so glad about that!) but you have read the story in my holiday report.

No shorts either... Who pinched them??? Admit to it and I'll buy you a big drink if you own up.

Hiya Kev and Bev!

So glad it wasn't me in that pic! Yes he looks as nutty as the rest of us. Something about Arillas, you seem to check your sanity in at the airport! (In my case I forgot to collect it on the return journey....)

We have such fond memories of all the goings-on last September, including yous two. I still wear my chav fake Burberry. Does Bev still wear hers (real of course....)

The pic reminded me of Eggy's post on the darts "couldn't hit a cow's a**e with a shovel." Well that one looks like the cow's a**e! Get yer shovel out Negg....

Hope yous are both well me luvvers. Jen and me are great as usual. Will be home in early July, but sadly September is out this year. Take care both

Small confession to the laundry people at Tria Adelphia.

I Did the green mud thing this year.

I then went into the sea and washed it off.

Later that day I went for a shower and dried myself using the towels supplied by the Tria.

To my horror the towel looked like I had dragged it across a muddy field.

The great thing about the Tria, is they do change the beds and towels quite often so my dirty habits did not show the next day.

And the mud had gone as well.

4x4 I sunbathe without clothes a great deal. Jen and me have done it it in Studland, in Dorset, on Brighton beach, in Rhodes, ah really anywhere the others accept.

But the clay (Green mud) in Arillas is so special. I have done it many times. Cannot endorse the skin adverts, but that feeling of freedom, innocence and joy I can. Naked and covered in clay, at one with everything, is something you understand or you don't. Well I do.

Next week Jen and me will do it all again of course.

Yes justphil. The feeling of freedom is good if only for a short two weeks.

Hope you have a great time and we get some photos to keep it all alive for us poor people left at home ))

The big question is how do you apply the mud?
Do you use it as a block and rub it on like soap or do you try and dissolve it first and then put it on.
Title: Re: Green Mud
Post by: patrickjohn on July 06, 2009, 01:16:34 PM
Hi
In answer to your question, 4x4, most people seem to favour the method where you get a flatish stone, put a lump or two of clay on, then some water, and using another stone or just fingers grind it into a sort of soft paste.  The clay is very soft and changes into a paste quite easily.
Hope you are now ready for your first try.
Best wishes

I always cover myself in the mud at least once during my stay. In the past I did it before going for a walk along the nuddy beach, You feel very self conscious walking along a beach with naked people staring at you. I forgot that I had all that mud on me and wondered why I was being stared at.

Glad you liked the underwater pics. They were taken with a disposable underwater camera, I'm now saving up for a digital underwater camera which also takes videos for next time. I haven't booked for Arillas next year, as I don't really know what will be happening next year, just taking things day to day. Hopefully though I will be back. September in Arillas would be good and I do think Kaloudis  has everything   you need and it is immaculate.

Take Care

Viv - we both use the clay - plaster it all over - let it dry and then go for a swim to wash it off. It seems to moisturise the skin beautifully. Phil sometimes has 'cornflake' elbows - this clay certainly helps to slough the dead skin off. Just try it - its good for you. Anne xx

Glad to see the Green Mud topic revived after a long spell by Ann.  It's great to know that someone else from Lincolnshire is a fan of green mud.  We Yellowbellies (Lincolnshire born & bred people) really ought to find yellow mud, but perhaps the green mud is just as good, after all the county flag is red, blue & green!

I did the green mud in July. Rather pathetically compared to the German folks who were spreading it everywhere, and all over one another. Maybe a bit too intimately for me.

But I haven't been in Arillas ever without having a go, and my record stands. I won't have anybody to criticise me at the end of October, and nobody will be there to take the picture. But I will do it anyway, just to keep up the record. And secretly enjoy it.....

Yet another aspect of my favourite place on earth.
Phil

Hi
Its amazing how these threads go on.  Viv started this one in 2004 and its still running.  She was new to green mud then, but I think she knows all about it now.
I've never indulged in a green mud session myself but have had lots of fun watching other people completely cover themselves in the stuff.  Some of them go to lots of trouble, gathering bits of the cliff, then pounding the clay in a pot to the right consistency before applying it to themselves or more often to someone else.  After all its much easier to apply it to someone else than it is to reach all those place round your back!
Lots of people (they often seem to be the ones speaking German) take photographs of themselves in the mud covered state.
Thankfully everyone seems keen to wash it all off in the sea before returning to the village.
Best wishes
Pat

It was so funny this year - we saw a group of peeps applying the mud to each other and then - doing Tai chi or however it is spelt - drinking beer from bottles and taking photos of each other - it amused us for quite a while especially as they could not do the proper stances after the beer lol. Just gone through all this thread again, it seems so daft now being worried about looking silly. All we can think off now is getting home and feeling relaxed and at peace with the world. XX

Everybody both clothed and unclothed should have a go at this fun activity. Every year we lather ourselves in the clay at least once and kid ourselves we have found the elixir of youth haha

Jo medear, this thread was so quiet until our viv posted in April. Before that it was 3 years earlier in 2011. People still do it though I think. If the beach is as good as Sandy said in last few days, I will be very "green" at some point this summer. I will not be in a communal situation though. Jen can't be with me, so I will pick a very quiet time.

I reckon with the upsurge in folk coming to Arillas we will see an old tradition renewed.

John and I giggled our way through mud application on both our visits last year.  During our second break we were even photographed by a German lady for some publicity stuff!  We said yes to her on account of us both been totally unrecognisable behind several layers of the green stuff lol

No doubt we shall do it all again this year :)

I felt as if I was getting burnt yesterday so the green mud went on all over, some people hadn't seen it before and just thought I was mad but Sandy and Angie still recognised me. Xx

So... first we have the "Jolly Green Giant" and then we have the "Jolly Green Diddy Viv"
Hmmmm!

Green Mud? - Sure I have eaten that somewhere and they called it pea soup.

In my experience, you can't predict the size of the 'summer' beach until after the spring storms.
I'm told that if the storms come from the north, they'll wash the sand away, but if they come from the south, they'll bring sand in. So at the mo', as Sandy says, there's still chance of improvement ( - not that they're ever bad enough to spoil a holiday - it is Arillas after all!)
