Title: Beach clean up
Post by: turkeyfoot on September 28, 2011, 10:48:42 AM
Recently  returned from our second visit to Arillas.
Nothing had changed. Excellent accommodation (Mathraki), wonderful people, great tavernas and fantastic wine festival.

Sadly the naturist  beach had not changed either, still untidy.

Having complained last year, this year was action time.
With Clive (an Eglish holiday maker) from  the ‘’ Keep Arillas Tidy’’ campaign, we cleared a moped frame, 3 refrigerator compressors, and 25 sacks (donated by the Armourada Taverna) of general rubbish.
Leon, from the Armourada, arranged for a boat to collect the rubbish from the beach and dipose of it.

Clive was presented with a diploma at the Wine Festival for his efforts in keeping the village clean.

Clive had never visited the ‘’nudy bit’’ before but has promised to in future.

Many people commented that it was the cleanest they had seen the beach for many years.
Lets hope next year everybody treats the beach with the respect it deserves.

I will be there to check up

Well done Clive and Turkeyfoot.  I don't visit that end of the beach myself, but I'm sure all who visit will appreciate your hard work.  I admire your willingness to participate in looking after your favourite place.

Eileen.

Sally and I along with Fiona cleared about 15/20 sacks of rubbish from the beach in May,The bags were given to us by Dimetris, and then he went by boat in th evening and picked them up.

Great stuff Clive and Turkeyfoot.

I do wonder how some of the rubbish gets on to the beach and would imagine that a lot gets washed up after being dumped by boats. I did wonder about the moped frame but that could also have been washed up on to the beach, especially as there was the unfortunate accident with the seventeen year old girl a few years ago. One of my pet hates is litter, of any description, and maybe these efforts by Clive and Turkeyfoot could encourage all Arilliacs to remove any rubbish from the beach.

Well done chaps! :)

Dumping rubbish happens unfortunately everywhere, even in the alley way across the street directly infront of my house here in London town.

Eejits are eejits and nothing can be done about them. But we can all do our little bit to help as every little really helps ;)

Excellent work by Clive, Turkeyfoot, Harold, Sally and Fiona.
Well done. Never having visited the north end of the beach I didn't know it was so untidy. Once again thank you all.

It was a privilege to meet you, Turkeyfoot on the last day of your clean up.  We can vouch for the efficacy of your good work - you made a wonderful difference.  On our arrival we found the north beach cluttered with old umbrellas, mats, sundry curtain material, not to mention the motor bike frame and fridge compressors.
When we left it was almost in the state nature intended thanks to Turkeyfoot (& allies) good work.
Just to prove it here's a picture of me taken on 10th September 2011 on the beautifully clear north beach:-

Nikos and I cleared about 8 sacks of rubbish from the north beach a few years ago and they sent a boat along later to collect it....I was more than happy to do it as I was sitting there most days. It was all stuff washed up from the sea - mostly plastic bottles, old shoes and bits of rope!!

My thanks too, turkeyfoot and everyone. I once contributed to a clear up, but forget which year now. Always willing, but I don't get there nerly as much as I used to - Jen finds the walk, let alone the wade just too much.

Thanks for your positve comments.
Whilst the rubbish at the start of the season may have been washed ashore during the winter,  other than the moped and compressors without exception it was food and drink packaging and containers, together with beach mats, lilos and brollies all in a state of disrepair we collected.
I can understand the thought about leaving behind your unwanted brollies etc at the end of your stay for others to use, (we all like to recycle)but eventually it all becomes damaged and of no use to anybody and is abandoned.
If everybody took their unwanted bits and pieces away with them on their last day, and dumped them in the official rubbish bins, the beach would be so much more attractive.
It is not just visitors, but even some locals,  leave behind rubbish

We noted during the wide beach of 2008, that the south end of the beach had a lot of plastic bottles and metal cans left behind. I would gladly spend a day Next Jun/July clearing up as I love the sun, but can't just sit in it for too long.

I think I might have suggested at the time, that a few business's could supply and/or sponsor a metal dustbin that could be weighted and have a bin bag in it. Maybe a half dozen would do and save so much time and effort. Some local or visiting arty types could paint them with pretty images of Arillas so they dont spoil the views.

I know litter is horrid and boils my blood, but when its 100 degrees, some may be tempted to leave a plastic bag of bottles, cans and snack wrappers behind if they have travelled a couple of hundred yards up the beach. If a bin was 20 yards away.......

Hi
Last year I said I will be back to check the beach.
Have just booked for two weeks from August 31st. Looking forward to it.
Hopefully it will be a lot cleaner for everybody to enjoy.
Does anybody know if the wine festival is on this year?

i remember about 4yrs ago ,the local school bought all the kids to the beach and walked the whole length and picked up all the rubbish ,it was a great gesture, and also taught the kids about pollution in there own area,,and hands together for billy in ammourada for his help in keeping the local area clean ,,but at the end of the day its down to the people who use the beach ,more bins and signage will help in the mean time ,,yammas

..... If a bin was 20 yards away.......
They would still leave the litter on the beach. !!!
It's a fact of life! Some people just don't care about their environment - they visit places like Arillas because they are so natural and unspoilt - then go and spoil them because they are too ******* lazy to take their litter home with them.
Ungrateful, inconsiderate *******'s

Very true. I'm quite happy to slap on some cream in June/July and spend a few hours clearing up the beach armed with a bin bag, as long as I can have a dip now and then and a Mythos or 3 afterwards.

Re the rubbish on the north beach, I feel I have to say that it is not all washed up and not all holiday makers.  I remember even on our first visit in 1993 walking up to the house on the end of the cliff top .  We looked over the edge several times along the way and could see dumped tiles, old plaster, fridges, cooker and all sorts of stuff that could only come from locals, we don't tend to take those items with us in our suitacses do we!!!.   However I also have to say that thanks to some of the local busines's such as Billy and Leon from Armourada and many others that things are getting better and all their efforts are greatly appreciated.

I am encouraged by the words of support on this issue. I look forward to my next visit on August 31st to see those words turned into action.
I hope to see a beach a lot cleaner than it has been the past two years.

For me the most important thing is respect

When you first go to the village are greeted as a tourist. The community extend a warm welcome and the traditional Greek hospitality, nothing is asked in return other than common curtsey.

When you leave you do so as a friend. When you return you are greeted as a friend.

When you leave friends you do not expect them to clean up your personal rubbish.

So to me, to show respect, at the end of your stay you don’t just abandon your inflatables, beach mats and brollies etc to fall into disrepair.
You do not  expect your friends to follow behind you  tidying up. You take your rubbish with you.

I don’t intend to sound pious over this, but to me it is important matter that can be easily resolved.
Lead by example and others will follow.
Geoff

Turkeyfoot talks a great deal of sense.  I fully support the notion that everyone should remove their own rubbish.
Julia and I always try to do that and sometimes remove additional rubbish as well.
The dilemma that we have and it seems many others do too relates to beach mats and brollies.  Often at the end of a holiday you have a couple of perfectly good beach mats and a brolly you do not wish to take home.  Many folk leave these behind in a prominent position (away from the tide) so as to be found and reused.  Of course broken mats and brollies should not be so left.
On holiday in Kos on a lovely naturist beach we found that most people left their brollies and mats beside the council bins at the nearby carpark.  This meant that if they were in good condition they would be reused and if there at the end of the day taken away in the council dustcart - a reasonable solution it seems to me.
What do you all think?

A good idea.
Whatever is left on the beach, for what ever reason and good intention, eventually becomes unusable and nobody then takes responsibility of disposing of it.

If everyone took just a carrier bag of rubbish with them when they left the beach and then put it in a bin, we would have cleaned most of the small stuff left on the beach each day.
The larger stuff ie... brollies airbeds straw mats ect. should be carried to the road and left near the bins as Patrick suggests.

A big up then to all who've been involved in cleaning up the North beach as last week it was spotless. Didnt see a single bottle, nothing. Cant remember the last time I saw such a tidy beach. I think it helps that Arillas does'nt attract the Brits-on-the-piss crowd, a major dealbreaker for us.

Turkeyfoot and Clive did a lot of the clean up last year along with many forum members who did their bit. It seems to have had an effect and the beach was tidier, and although the same people have worked very hard this summer too I think more people have taken their own litter to the bins.

So once again thank you all for keeping the beach tidy, just take a bag and take your rubbish and any bits you see on the beach to the bins.
If we all do this we will......... KEEP ARILLAS TIDY :)

Thanks to everybody who pledged their support on this issue and put words into action.

Having just returned from two glorious weeks in the sunshine (apart from the last day) I gave the beach 9/10 for cleanliness.

When I first went there in 2010 and 2011 it scored 0/10

On the first day I went armed with a bundle black sacks, donated by the Armourada, to find I only needed to use one.
In the whole two weeks I only used 4 sacks. The rubbish was mainly broken brollies and mats etc with the odd abandoned lilo. A fantastic improvement, so thanks again to all those who have helped throughout the season.
To think in 2011 myself and Clive cleared 25 sacks.

Lets all keep up the good work for next year and make the beach a pleasure to visit

I only managed one proper day on the beach in July, and went "south" but was impressed by the cleanliness and ease of access. A lot of work has gone into it. (Nothing wrong with the beach, our July in Arillas has become a gigantic social event, and we are looking forward to more of the same in 2013. It's already brewing....)

But we will be "all alone and abandoned in Arillas" to quote Dimitri, in a few weeks time, and I promise to post pics of how the beach is then, from North to South.

I think it was wonderful this year. A new shape, but so what? How many acres of sand does one need? I much prefer Arillas beach to our neighbouring ones at Ag. George and San Stef.

I feel a bit embarrassed about asking this but....  Is the South beach to the left, as you look at the beach?  Really should know this after 4 years of visiting Arillas but my spatial awareness is not great!

If left is "South," then have to say that after several days of visiting, we were really impressed with the cleanliness in July/August!  No rubbish on the beach - just an umbrella left for other people to use!

Would love to visit in October during school hols but Daughter's wedding has left us pretty much broke!

No major problems, beach smaller this year so less to maintain, but the main bin at beginning of pier was overflowing with rubbish each morning. A bit unsightly and smelly. Small gripe, but its a focal point that has had money spent on it in the last couple of years.

Hi
The main beach  always seems  clean. It is the naturist end (to the right of the main beach) I refer to  which has tended to get a bit untidy with abandoned lilos, brollies and mats etc,  together with food and drink in the past.
wrappings and containers

Not really any abandoned brollies and lilos yet at that end, partly because it has been so difficult to get to this season. Some people did a big tidy up a few weeks ago and Dimitris came on a boat and removed about 10 big plastic sacks of rubbish that had been collected.....so it's all looking good.
Title: Re: Beach clean up
Post by: turkeyfoot on September 14, 2013, 12:11:41 PM
The north end of the beach was, I am sorry to say, not very clean and tidy. See previous reports on this issue.
The first week I cleared some 10 sacks of rubbish consisting of rotting beach mats, broken brollies, deflated lilos, food and drink containers together with soiled nappies.
In all I cleared a total of 14 sacks in two weeks.

I have expressed my views on this many times, and at the risk of sounding boring why do people just leave there rubbish behind?
They may think they are doing someone a favour by leaving their beach mats, brollies and lilos on the beach at the end of the holiday, but eventually  when they fall into a state of disrepair they just get abandoned.
There is no absolutely excuse  for food containers, drink cans, beer bottles and soiled nappies to be left behind

You are quite right.

No excuses at all. Take everything back with you, that you came with, and leave it looking good for the next "user" to enjoy.

And if "boring" is the only way to get the message over then, please be as "boring" as you like.

Hear! hear! to you both. I have never understood the mentality of leaving a place you have enjoyed in a mess. It takes no effort at all to take away whatever you brought with you.  It shouldn't fall to a few to clear up other people's mess.

Hi
I am back in September so hopefully all will be clean and tidy.
Early one morning last year I found a bikini laying in the sand, seemingly abandoned. There was nobody in sight, myself and partner were the only ones apparently on the beach, so I picked it up and added it to my rubbish sack. Next day in the same location I found another bikini. Coincidence I thought, so I put in on top of a stick protruding from the sand, and left it. Shortly afterwards a German lady came out of the sea and picked up  the bikini. She told me somebody had taken  her swimwear the previous day. She put it on and swam back to the main beach. After that I saw her several days swim to the naturist beach, take her bikini off enjoy a swim and her sunbathing and put her swimwear back on and swim back to the main beach where presumably she had left the rest of her clothing. I must admit I did not confess to being responsible for her naked swim back that day. The following days I left her bikini's where they were.

How did you keep a straight face when she told you her story?
I couldn't stop laughing just telling it to Bill.

Me too Val meluvver - still smiling!

Geoff, I have to ask. Somebody once left me with absolutely nothing to cover my "dignity". Was it you???? My shorts disappeared in similar circumstances when I had literally nothing else with me on North beach.

I found a discarded beach bat, but was eventually rescued by a German couple, who gave me a pair of underpants to help me navigate to Kaloudis without being arrested..... I posted a pic (IN the pants, I hasten to add!) in my holiday report.

But seriously, I totally support your campaign to keep Arillas beach as clean and tidy as it deserves.

I have to say that we have just returned from Arillas and were so impressed at how clean the beach was.  It was cleaned meticulously every morning - an absolute credit to the lovely people of Arillas.

And you too Geoff.... so funny!   STOP....... THIEF!!!!!! hahahaha

Hi Phil
Pleased to say I did not take your shorts. In future I will leave swimwear alone.
Another story from last year was that a local German lady who walks her dogs every morning on the beach asked me if "I wanted any more s e x". Surprised, I replied that I have not had any yet.
A friend of the German lady looked aghast, and asked if she knew what she had said.
It appears the German for sacks, is s e x (or a word that is very similar in sound)

Haha Geoff! Reminded me of a similar misunderstanding in Sydney. David was lagging behind as we strolled through King's Cross in Sydney, then (maybe now too) the 'red light' district. A woman approached David and said what he thought was 'You want cigs?' he said 'I don't smoke thanks'. She said her piece again more clearly 'Do you want sex?' !!! He said 'That's my wife' and pointed to me. She said 'She can come too'. He said 'No thanks' and caught me up laughing his head off. A highlight! Mo x

I remember, many years ago, young with very little cash, being stopped in the street by a lady who said...
"Do you wanna good time?"
"Only got 50 pence" says I.
"No problem!" says she , " I've got change!! " - Hmmmmm/
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyway.... Once again this year I missed the beach clean up. I never seem to know when it is happening, maybe because I live in Kavaddades.

So .......Perhaps some you guys, who joined in this year, make a mental note and PM me for next year.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lied about the lady above , by the way. I really hade a pound note and she had no change for that.

Have just returned from Arillas.
I was pleasantly surprised that the far North Beach was reasonably clean and tidy. Far the best I have seen it on day one of my holiday. Most days I cleared a quantity of rubbish, but far less than in previous years
Still the odd few who seem determined not to take their rubbish with them when leaving the beach. Can’t convince them all I suppose
I think some of the improvement is due to fact there are now beds on the beach, as there is on all the bays north of the pier, with exception of the area where there was the major incident last year, when the sunbeds where buried in a mud slide during the day. The bed man tends to keep ‘’his’’ area clean and tidy.

Geoff is quite right about the general improvement in tidiness.  It was good to talk to Geoff.  His enthusiasm for keeping the north end of the beach in pristine condition is much admired and I'm sure all of us who enjoy that end are grateful to him.  Many thanks Geoff!

A little bit of seaweed was washed up after one of the storms but soon disappeared aided by the efforts of the sunbed man, and the action of the tide.

Picture of me taken on 7th September 2014 down at the north end of Arillas beach.
