From someone whose "Matchstick" men , that I always tried to draw, and never looked like men or matchsticks, I have to say it must be great to have a talent to create something on this scale.

Not sure if this was commissioned by the local council or just a generous gift, from the artist, Jean Walsh.

It's a little like Marmite. You will either love it or hate it. I remember when Mirage first opened. It had many critics giving it the nickname of "Flintstones Park". Now many guests return there, each year, and it settles nicely into the community. Well recommended by many. Be your own judge on the Mermaid and interesting to read any feedback.

Sorry about my "giggle" earler. It was more about the...........
................ "WOTSTHATALLABOUT" not the statue. - DONCHTERKNOW??

Cheers

Ah, Steve n Carole - If only I could look that slender and sleek and, OK I may have posed for it but she got the "tail" wrong and the nose too small...........

.................So , the Mermaid is working and doing her bit for Arillas!

I foresee many pilgrimages by various groups of "Harry Krishnas" and other wonderful people to queue just to kiss the feet of this white wonder from the sea.
I will be there, selling Hot Dogs and Pukka pies and look forward to my retirement  with a hefty bank account and a Mercedes, or even just a slightly new Punto.

My opinion...?? - Keep this fishy thing and promote positive and negative comments as both will get an extra super talking/debating point for Arillas.

Well done Jean Walsh. Many reactions and many views. - LUVIT!
I still remain very envious of the talent required to produce this.
(Leave this type of thing to me and all you get is a badly made bookshelf!-not good for a beach promo!)

And another point.....
Miss "M" , I believe is now the Arillas oracle as she told me , today -
- that the England World Cup Squad is playing the Spanish Team in a friendly , next week , as they both have no plans for the next few days!!

She also said that 36/1 (First price) for Holland to win the World Cup was a steal but to put money on Belgium , each way, to get to the final.
(If she is wrong she will very soon have a very nice black moustache and specs!!!)

I did notice when I saw her that everyone gave her hands a little rub, maybe this will be our Peter Pan. :)

Good luck, will come to all who touch her hands?? (They might shrink with rubbing).

With all honesty.....there is no way I could even attempt anything like that, even to try to draw a mermaid is beyond my artistic capabilities....so thank you Jean Walsh for the Mermaid of Arillas, it has become a talking point.

Absolutely wonderful viv. Now I have to go on my own, I never take the camera to North beach. But your pics have given me second thoughts. No-one, not even Eggy would think the worst of me taking pics of such great sand art. Thank you for posting them.

And for my halfpenny worth, I like Jean's sculpture, and feel it adds to, not detracts from my favourite mile of coastline on earth.

I must admit that I was getting on quite well with the lady in the 2nd pic.......

...... But then , when the tide came in she buggered off. - Maybe something I said??

So , c'mon peeps! - Name the Arilliac who posed for these! - A mine field beckons!!
( I did the tortoise. Took so long and was so hot I ended up shell shocked!! )

And the "bear". The smile reminds me of some one on his 5th Mythos.

THE MERMAID´S HANDS???
Dear fellow Arilliacs, can it be that you have never met a real Mermaid? Because then you would know that her hands are webbed!
Hence, if you ever meet one with unwebbed hands, beware! She is a fake!
(By the way, there is a lovely short story about a Mermaid by the Italian author Giuseppe di Lampedusa, called The Professor and the Siren, which I recommend. It has been published in Penguin. Anybody who falls in love with a Mermaid does it at his or her peril.)

Don't worry Phil, those sculptures were on the textile beach, before any wading even, and photographed by almost everyone who passed.

Every day the couple would come down the beach and set up a makeshift shelter. The woman went to work on the sculptures while the husband went to sleep!

I'm with you on cameras on the naturist beach. Like you, as a single male I can feel a bit wary alone on the naturist beach. If I started wandering around with a camera I can't imagine what people would think.

If I remember correctly you and Jen will soon be back in Arillas. Enjoy!

Well Dai and Phil - talking of cameras...

John and I were on the North beach last July  / August, covered in mud from head to toe, when a German (we think) lady stopped and asked to take our pictures for some tourist promotional thingy.  She had one of the fancier type cameras with the long lens.  Since we figured we were pretty much unrecognisable, due to the over application of mud (so thick it was taking forever to dry), we agreed.  It was one of our funniest experiences ever; stood there with no clothes on and a complete stranger taking pics :)

I dread to think where the pics might be - perhaps we have an unknown claim to fame or maybe they went straight in the bin ...

THE MERMAID OF ARILLAS

A statue has appeared in Arillas
Causing Steve and Carole to shout,
“There’s a mermaid on the seafront!
So WHATSTHATALLABOUT??”

They joked it was Neill’s first modelling gig.
He agreed that yes, he had posed
For Jean Walsh, the local artist but
The mermaid had too kind a nose.

Some thought she’d look better with a tan
Because she really was too white,
Or didn’t know her hands should be webbed
So thought they didn’t look right.

Dylan claimed to speak to the real one
Every year after ouzo clock,
It’s strange that only he can see her
But then who are we to mock?

A second mermaid appeared in the sand,
Resembling an Arillas fan as planned.
I don’t know who, please give me a clue
Or would that be really out of hand?

Neill got on well with the sand version
Until she left on the next tide,
He wonders if it was something he said
That made her want to go and hide.

Who covered the stone maiden’s assets?
Reported to have happened anon,
With a leopard skin bikini top,
Neill wondered where his had gone!

Eggy claimed that rumour had it,
The mermaid would stand and salute
If a sober person was to pass
After 1am – what a hoot!

“A mermaid who can stand,” said Val
“Would really be a sight to see.”
“So have you never been sober then
At one in the morning?” asked he.

John the Ref may see the miracle,
Surely enough to make him blink,
But maybe such a tremendous sight
Would lead him straight back to the drink!

So thanks to all my forum pals
For giving me a good laugh,
And thank you to our artist, Jean
Who’s much too clever by half.

Love to all,
lynn xx

About the mermaid on Arillas sea front
You always get the words spot on
And make things very poignant.

But it made me sad to read these words
Because you have only read about it.
I just wish one thing, that very soon
you and Colin, will get to Arillas to touch it.

You're right Lynn, not a likeness from the full face view of anyone who visits Arillas, or perhaps the sand artist just can't do faces ;)

The look on the face of the polar bear though is one you often see in Arillas.....pure contentment.

The German couple came to Palio with us and told us they didn't know the lady's name but pointed her out to us the next day. She actually has medium length hair and goes to Arillas twice a year, her noise isn't as big as on the mermaid and is a lovely person. Wonder if Eggy is still thinking  of the same Arilliac.

PJ with the Arillas Mermaid (https://flic.kr/p/pkt5cB) by pj's memories (https://www.flickr.com/people/35011173@N06/), on Flickr

It was on the morning of 12th September when I was chatting to this mermaid - she said she had had enough of the storms and was off to somewhere calmer.  That very evening when Julia and I returned from one of our favourite tavernas, there she was gone.  A small crowd gathered as we peered at the empty plinth speculating as to where she had gone.  It was several days before Ann and Andy Blackwood came up with the answer.

I gather she has returned now that the weather is calmer.

"Hang on a minute" - PJ - What is that Mermaid staring at?

Bet she's thinking:- " That's not his Speedos! "

The good news is that she looks more "stoned" than you.

Sadly 'twas not a day for Speedos - you can see all that water on the roadside - the beach was saturated.  I think it had got to the dear lady mermaid and she was feeling downcast.
She may have been a little stoned but it was too early in the day for me.  The case might have been altered later on my returning from the taverna.

I think you are right, Harold.  But are we not all arty folk who go to Arillas?  After all we have chosen this wonderful spot for our holidays which says something about our taste.  It's also wonderful that in Arillas people have the time to devote to their artistic side, perhaps for a change, and can produce lovely shell or stone designs, as well as sand sculptures.

So agree Harold and Patrick.

Places like our Arillas always attract artistic people, and long may it continue. Sculptors, painters, writers, musicians, actors, dancers, photographers.... they so enrich our lives in Arillas.

I know a very interesting story about three of the sculptures, but that will be for Facebook as this is my last post on the forum in 2014.

The forum has (in my opinion) been ruined by the same drivel day after day. Just can't join in any more.

I have answered this , under a new topic " Arillas My View" which you will all find under general chat.

I am also thinking that the "F" in "Old Art" should be re-instated as it is not my intention to upset anyone.

As for the Mermaid?? - Well , lets leave this topic open for just that. (I promise no more jesting! - Maybe)
