Title: arillas.com my view
Post by: dimitris on February 29, 2008, 03:10:21 PM
Hello Dear friends of arillas ,
After some member’s recommendations and discussions about how one can help this website by offering any help or financial support etc I decided to start this new topic.
From the beginning I have never wanted to accept donations from the members towards the upkeep of the website.  So I hope that you understand in my postings about it being a hobby and getting enjoyment from it etc.  Accepting donations does not 'sit well' with my principles and inner most feelings.

In my life I’m always trying to be so careful not to offend anyone and like to please everybody. So just sometimes things happen where I’m  put in an awkward and difficult position when I don't want to offend people by saying what I feel because it goes against my 'goodness', but there are times when I do have to put my own feelings first.  After all in this particular situation people can donate money and quickly forget about it....but in the long term it is me who has to live with the consequences...  What if I decide to end the website and forum? What if people think that by donating it gives them a 'stronger say' in what happens on the forum?
In the instance of the Webcam it is not a problem, all the Business owners who have donated have all had the benefit to their business in one way or another from our website, but even then I feel not comfortable collecting the money.
My vision for this website is that one day all the business of Arillas would have to come together and create a non-profit official association of tourism and culture or something similar. Only then, it would be clear and easy to deal with donation money etc as well us financial support from the local council and other governmental resources.
Of course I’m honoured by the kindness and generosity shown by the members in their willingness to help with the purchase of a weather station which is something that has been difficult for me to convince the local population, as there are still many residences that don’t understand the feeling of being away of Arillas for a whole year and looking at this website can make people very emotional.
In order to keep things neutral and clear we will have to vote or recommend within our online community some members that would collect the donation.
After that we have to find out which weather station would suit our needs and once we find it we start collecting .
Any recommendations welcome!

Let's not forget that the aim of this website is not to promote Arillas as much as possible but to help our small beach village to  keep it's Authenticity and attract the right customers  I believe that we all have the power to prevent commercialisation just by being members of this forum.

Have a nice day!

Dimitris

Hello Dimitris,

Thank you for putting your view across and I believe I understand the point you make. We all have fun on this site and feel that it keeps us closer to our dream of actually being in Arillas. So thank you for letting us hang out here :)

Just being able to log on, check the webcam, read all the posts  keeps me going.

So thank you for running the site and I am sure the forum members will come up with some good suggestions.

You have made your feelings very clear Dimitris and I for one can see the position that you could be put in, as I am sure most members of the forum will. You have done a wonderful job with this web site and as it is your "baby" we must all take on board your thoughts and support your views. You would probably say it's our forum but we would all agree that you are the main man!! As Sandy said, I'm sure you would never want to offend anyone.

We have read your piece twice, and understand completely what you are saying and why. In particular, your passion to prevent the over-commercialisation of our favourite village in the world has everyone's support. Also be assured that NONE of us are offended by your views - it must be hell wondering daily what so many think of you or your site. Not many have the generosity of spirit to bear that for as long as you have. Well don't worry. What we all seem to be expressing is our immense affection and gratitude to you even though we may have done it in a way which has caused you pain.

Jen and I have spent nearly 6 whole days since end of October logged into this fantastic website. We go online several times a day like many others do. We will support you whichever way you choose to  develop it in the future. We are so glad that your hobby gives us so much pleasure and graciously accept your generosity in making it possible.

Phil and Jenny

Hi Dimitris, As I read your posting I could almost hear you voice saying the same. I remember disscusing the subject with you a few visit's ago and fully understand where you are coming from. It would be like somebody coming to me and saying I want this dog doing such & such by tomorrow and such & such by the next day and nether the dog or I would enjoy it, it is a hobby and has to be done at a pace that we both enjoy. I would hate having to feel obliged to do it because I was getting paid.
We all get enjoyment from your hobby so it is only right that you should continue to do so. We love you very much and would hate for you to feel uncomfortable about it. Viv

Dimitris my friend, the forum has shown after the last 9 months how much we agree with you and are grateful for your position. Many of us take advantage of this channel to communicate with one another, but whether we are a good advertisement for Arillas is open to question. My guess is that we are. Your forum members try to entertain, try to inform, try to recruit. What holds us together is your place, which we adore.

Your view of the forum last May is so clearly correct now, proved after all of these months.

I justknow this post will be followed by the usual rush of thank yous, but in truth we are all deeper than that. You have stuck to your views and got it right. Well you have for Jen and me. Anyone else?

Phil

Hi
 Just stumbled across this thread.
Over 20 years ago when a 386 computer cost over £3,000. I went into the computer world. Learned “Basic”, built my own computers.

Now, just loading software gives me a headache.
So when I can’t actually get live streaming on the Arillas web cam. ( which I cant ) I don’t sit fuming. I sit wondering
“What can I do to help”
So perhaps,
Just perhaps,
if there was a way of communicating what the problems are and what you need to solve them. Software, Hardware, or even money.
And a way of making a contribution anonymously !   (cash,  Paypal).
There might Just be some one out there or even several someone’s out there, who could make modest contributions ( very modest ) without being identified, to help with what “We” ( that is now a collective we  )  consider a bit of a lifeline. No begging, no pleading , no guilt trip. But no self gratification either. (even if its just a box on the wall of your restaurant.) We might all benefit.

Just a  thought.

4x4 can I buy you another voddie frappe? Would love to in the Coconut Bar.

Arilliacs are easily identified by their ability to ignore reality and live in their own little world that includes beach, friendship and food. And more, but don't publish that bit. Some call us mad, but in spite of our maddness we represent what they all want from their lives.

But after reading your post I have revisited that point of view and I really wonder if you are serious or is it the effect of voddie frappe? If not, send me a PM and we can stop boring the forum in public

all good wishes
Phil

Dimitris,

My wife and I have visited Arillas for the last 9 yrs and immediately fell in love on our first visit.
We visit your page every day of the year just to get a look aat the peace and tranquility. Not that we could not remember it, but each day makes it a day nearer to our holiday.
We really enjoy the "Live view" and the different locations of the camera. Could you please arrange for the lens to be cleaned as since the last drop of rain it has left marks on the lens.

Some one has to climb on the roof of the Horizon Hotel to clean the lens! We have had rain recently with a red dust which has left all the cars etc. very dirty. More rain possible next Thursday or Friday so it might self clean.

This is an old thread but still relevant. Facebook (I call it Facetube, or just Tube) has altered the way in which we Arillas folk interact. Now we can get instant gratification, replies or even news in real time. Some, like my Jen, just hate it but still watch our forum.

I have tried hard not to dominate the forum since last autumn, reducing my immediate reaction to post in everything and get to know everybody.  And I have robbed Dimitris of celebrating the first member to make 5000 posts. Thank you Boss. I couldn't have coped with that. I am not here for me, but to be part of our Arillas community.

This website, arillas.com has carved out a unique place on the internet, with values and attitudes that Dimitris has upheld and agonised over during the years. I still believe that it is important to be a part of it. Long live arillas.com

As someone who is IT challenged I suspect I have missed a lot of this discussion. So lest I exhibit once again my ignorance all I will say is that I regard the forum as my link to all of you and to Arillas.
If that means that I am out of the loop sometimes that is just a shame.

Facebook has its place. As you know, I`m part of it. Most of us belonging to the groups on there, however, began life on arillas.com.
This is the place to come for dedicated Arilliac information. Long may it continue.
On FB, conversations can take a different tack, which I like being part of. I also know that many of you will never entertain using FB and prefer to catch up on here. I have no problem with that. Each to their own and all that.

I'm on Facebook (and the Arillas page) but still seem to come here to see what's going on in Arillas and read the posts of others. Whilst Facebook is more instant, this is a far better arena for discussions, requests for information and ooo-ing and ahhhh-ing over photos. It somehow feels more like home from home, Arillas via PC!
Looking forward to the real thing though in about 6 weeks!!

I am glad it is still important to so many.

I have feet in both camps. I interact with folk on FB, people who I would never do so without it. The truth is I spend far too long reading FB. Forum used to be a couple of posts, live life for a while, and then read replies. Nowadays the Corfu, Arilliac and local friends on Facebook dominate my precious hours. The live-life bit seems to have disappeared. But it is in such an addictive way that I can't let go. Facebook makes it so easy to be there.

In July, when I am actually there rather than dreaming, I will post Arillas Today on my forum. Inside me, that is where I feel most comfortable.

Phil - where you spend your "Virtual" life is entirely up to you of course, but for me FaceTube is just too impersonal. It's run as a BUSINESS, and quite why so many people post all their personal details and discuss so much private stuff is beyond me. Don't they realise that FB uses ALL of it??? AND they keep it too, just 'cos you delete a post or a message don't think that they haven't already got all the information that they want from it.
This Forum, on the other hand, is run by a REAL PERSON, whom we all know personally, and it is done for entirely altruistic reasons.
Give me Arillas Dot Com ANY day - this is where REAL friends are made, you don't need a "Friend" button on this site, we are all friends by default.

How we used to share! Just read this thread again, and feel even more strongly that sound-bites and instant humour is all that counts to so many. FaceTube means that tomorrow it will all be gone, say what the hell you like today. I am obviously guilty of that as well, usually under the influence.....

The forum that I adore has connected me to folk I now count as true friends. Arillas and my Greek friends are at the top of my agenda in spite of them all. Sorry folks, it is Arillas and being there that diverts me from ny rural Somerset idyllic life in UK.

The forum is a way for me to spend time with them. Facebook is a duty for me - but I prefer the forum.

Phil

I hope the forum keeps going keeping us all in touch, but looking at the stats, it would appear that 'facebook' and 'twitter' and the like are reducing the number of posts here by a large amount as every year goes by. I have never used either, they seem 'shallow' and pointless to me, but that's my view. Probably OK if you have a large circle of people to 'tweet' etc. but from what I have seen of it, 'had breakfast in town' etc., a waste of time. Emails replace the Royal Mail for letters, I am a Dinosaur, and would rather stay that way.
Long live Arillas.com!

As one of the oldtimers on this site and the old one,i still love coming on here. The webcam helps get over the back to work blues. Also this site is very much needed for the information on Arillas alone. All i can say is we all need it and i wish i had such a good hobby.Dimitris knows my veiws so will leave it at that.

Well said Harold. I have my 'daily fix' on the webcam and catch-up on all the news, it's an 'essential' part of my day, especially in all this gloom and wet of our British winter. It's the 'light at the end of the tunnel' as far as I am concerned. Keeps us good friends in contact throughout the year. Not sure what happens on 'facebook' or 'twitter', but on the Arillas website, you can 'look back' if needed and re-read old posts and memories.
Again a BIG thank you Dimitris for all you do, it's so much appreciated.
Martin.

It's sad to think the forum is used less now.
I'm not so sure that the forum is used any less than it was, just that Facebook appears to be busier due to all the inane and pointless posts like Martin mentioned - I mean, who cares that you had breakfast in town, or that the man next to you on the bus is snoring, and all the silly "Share" motos about what a wonderful person a grandmother/mother/ son/ daughter/ grandchildren is(are). We KNOW that!
The content of this forum is far more meaningful, and much more helpful - not just to us "old-timers" who forget things, but to newcomers as well, because it is so easy to search and find things that were posted years ago - like this actual thread that was started more than 6 years ago! You try finding a piece of useful information that was posted on Facebook by one of your "Friends" (but you can't remember which one) 6 weeks ago - No Chance!
There are other reasons why I believe this forum will always be better than FaceTwit, but I have already posted them on this thread (« Reply #43 on: June 03, 2013, 01:05:20 PM ») so I won't bore you again. But just because there are fewer posts it does not mean that people are losing interest in this site - many are like me, they may not post a lot but they are here every day looking at the webcam, reading through old threads, and just enjoying being part of a community of very special people that are "ArillasDotCom"

I have loved the forum since I first joined in June 2007. It is good to see it thrive, in spite of some tense times during those seven years. I have made about 5400 posts during those years, and made a decision to curb myself by one means or another as I felt I was too prominent. I post less now, but have probably read every word that has ever been posted on here. I adore the webcam, but most of all it is the people who post that I care about most.

I am on many Arillas groups on Facebook, and that keeps me in touch with many others I have met or want to meet. Personally I only use it for that. I have 200+ "friends" of whom only a handful are not associated with Arillas. It is very valuable to me as another year-long connection with my spiritual home.

I will continue with both as long as I am able. But my heart belongs here, on Dimitris' website, and in a couple of weeks will post Arillas Today each day I am there, like I now always do.

We are looking forward to that my friend, you know Phil your posts are missed here.....many of us looked forward to reading 'daily news'
and 'views' told only as you can.

Please share some of them with us again.

Like many, I enjoy the fun (and even better the bitchy-ness/boasting on Facebook) but like Phil, I doubt there is a single day since I first joined the Arillas forum (2003?) that I have not had a quick look. Addiction?  Yes. There is NO substitute! I still remember visiting Brouklis one year after finding out that their proprietor was the founder of 'Arillas.com'. I said can you tell me who Dimitris is please? And the Richard Gere lookalike (apparently haha) introduced himself. The rest is history!! And for the record. If his lamb chops were not subllime beyond sublime (not mentioning the stuffed peppers and moussaka, baklava, wine, greek salad) I would never have returned!! (Probably)

An addiction to Arillas.com, mmmm yes think I've got it too ;)

Brouklis......yes got that as well....... All the lamb dishes and sardines and soforito, spit roast chicken and pork, can't complete this list now because I have severe heartache that I will have to wait until May to cure :( :(

Just rereading this post and my reply to Jo, I forgot to say that I think that Dimitris looks to me like a different film star.......he looks rather like Eric Bana to me, I may have mentioned this before years ago but have just looked at the profile page of Eric again my opinion hasn't changed :) :) but Jo, Richard is good as well :D.
