Title: Favourite Dish in Arillas
Post by: MandyME on June 14, 2008, 08:04:34 PM
Just talking to fellow Arillas lovers about food in our favourite resort, the debate is getting quite heated, there are so many choices.

Has anyone got any thoughts on their favourite to help us on the way

Mandy and Colin

Garlic prawns in the Graziella have been tried and tested by us many of our friends, and they still are the number 1 food in Arillas. But take the best in each different establishment - just spend your days trying them all. There is so much to choose from.....

If I had to pick one dish it would be Fish Bourdeto at Brouklis. I loved the flavour of the potatoes that are cooked in with the fish.

Tomas's Sea bream at Vavillas
Garlic Prawns at Graziella
Bourdetta fish stew at Brouklis
Creperies at Helen's (can't remember the name of the one we tried, but it had everything in it!)
Cheesecake at Horizon
(and as I don't eat meat, I have a passion for)
Stuffed Peppers at Thalassa
Courgette Keftedes at Brouklis, and last but definitely not least
Vegetarian Moussaka at Portofino
Loads!

Hi, everyone... flying in on 4th july for a week... first timers on the island...

Can I ask, I know that it's mainly a cypriot dish, but is there anywhere i town that serves Tahini (sometimes also called tahinoslata) ? - different from Houmus, more runny, my favourite sauce to go with kleftiko..

Merseygull.  I have never seen tahini in the menu or in any of the supermarkets... the first time I went to Greece I asked for humus... they just looked at me and stared as if I was mad!  No.... definately not greek I think, more turkish!  I dont think tahini is a greek dish and as you know Greece is very different from Cyprus as they will tell you in no uncertain terms.. (I have a  Cypriot friend and he says he is not Greek!)  LOL

Brouklis: Meze and the fish dish with tomato sauce
Kostas on the Beach: King Prawns in herb, garlic and tomato sauce
Thalassa: Erotic Symphony (Rocket and parmesan salad with fried chicken) and Kokkinisto

Of course there are much more but these get my mouth watering at the moment :)

Too many to mention but for a snack, Gorgeous George's mum's homemade Spinnakopita (-not sure how to spell it) and also her courgette pie!!!!! Before they opened the snack bar, we stayed in their appartments up the hill, and she used to leave us 'presents' on the kitchen table every day, freshly cooked - marvellous.

I love the gyros pitta, all in that soft doughy bread... eaten on the beach with a mythos.. brilliant!  They also do a nice egg and chips if you fancy a change for lunch and good for kids... the eggs are lovely!

True BG - my digestion usually decides to stay off huge amounts of rich and delicious food that I throw down when I first get there. Egg and chips is sometimes a welocme change, and the eggs are as you say really good. But then I go out in the evening and still eat more. Last summer I put on a nearly a stone in 2 weeks. Oh well, so far I seem able to lose it again!

With all the great food flying around Phil, it is hard to say no, but if you fancy something a bit lighter, there's always Greek Salad, even a salad dodger like myself manages a few of those while I'm there! Normally as a starter though and washed down with plenty of Beer!

Hi Robin,

Yes, it truly is a place of ageing hippies, superb food, excellent local wine and ultra friendly locals!!  lol (To say nothing of the beach!)  Absolute paradise is right.....

Jo,

I'll have to try the chips next visit.  Thanks for the tip.

Post by: blondegirl on June 25, 2008, 02:01:13 PM
Jo... they arent the same gyros/kebabs that we get in the UK.  nothing like it otherwise I wouldnt eat them!  The meat tastes like chicken but could be pork, but they throw a few chips in, tzatsiki and salad too, in a nice soft flat bread.. none of this pitta bread that goes soggy. I will have at least ONE for lunch, work up an appetite after a long walk whilst we are away... then its back to the salads and kleftiko, stifado, stamna, sea bream and everything else on offer!

Also , to repeat what BG just said, they are nothing like the kebabs you get here. There's no big, fly-infested lump of something, revolving in the background! - it's actual , clearly indentifiable, pieces of chicken.

You must try one , Jo.

Along with the many of the locals I love my Gyros, last year I'm sure that's what my friend ate all holiday.

In and around Arillas though every Gyros I have had has been Pork, you can usually see it cooking on the spit behind the counters, there is one at the Grill bar next to the Malibu, it looks like Donna Kebab spits we have at home in our Burger bars but trust me that is where the comparison ends. If you feel like a treat after a long walk Tasty Corner at the Crossroads in San Stefanos does an almighty Gryos, just count the locals in there, always a good sign and it open very very late.

Chicken Gyros exits but I have never seen or been offered one in Corfu, saying that there are many places in Corfu I have not been :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gyros

Food wise:

Anything unhealthy from George's for Breakfast :)
Anything Lamb from Kostas
Chicken al la Crème from Horizon
Sofrito and Slouvaki from Brouklis
Mirage for great value and atmosphere
Grill bar for anything after midnight.

My Mum asked me to mention the fish from Gratziella and I wish I could remember the name but in Avliotes over looking the town square right by the road is a fantastic restaurant with an amazing view looking down the valley toward Sidari or you can turn round and watch people struggle on the insane roads, always worth the price of admission when a tour bus rolls up. If you look for it, it is right next to the big clock on the wall.

Special mentions to Town Pizza, Beachcomber (just try the Fillet), both in San Stefanos and Dyonosis having an evening meal to that view is quite special and the food is great to, unfortunately someone will have to drive, unless you stay there of course http://www.dionysoscorfu.com/

I thought it was pork, but it tasted like chicken, had a bit of a herby taste to it like souvlaki, anyway miles better than any other I have tried.

What is the name of the very special place that was talked about some time ago?  The one with the fabulous views and is a bit tricky to get to.  The sunsets were spectacular... Was it "Sunset Restaurant"?  I cant remember and have tried looking for it.  I remember you recommending it Joe.

Your favorite dish in Arillas, apart from your partner that is, must be hard to call.

I think that it depends on how you feel that evening.

The other evening we went out with, at the top of my list, a fat steak as a priority.
I ended up with 2 pitta wraps, 1 chicken and 1 pork, plus a helping of chips and loved them to bits.
How often do we alll change our mind at the last minute?

That said, I love Broukli fish in red sauce and fish in white wine sauce. This is a recommendation from someone who eats very little fish.

So many Tavernas and so many dishes to choose from. - Try em all.
Cheers
Negg

I agree Eggy, it's a hard one to call.

Whilst there during our 2 weeks we had several different meals. Brouklis- Lamb chops the first visit. Second visit Sue had the Spit Roast Lamb, she was enjoying it that much i was going to ask Dimitris if he had a bigger fork. I had the Spit Roast Chicken and it was beautiful. We also ate at Portofino- Lamb chops one night another we had the peppered steak. To many to mention. :)  :)

Dunno about a trojan horse but something came undercover on my pc yesterday and over 900 emails came into my Outlook in under one minute after I stupidly opened an email written in Greek.  Stupid ol me for opening it in the first place (http://easyfreesmileys.com/smileys/free-confused-smileys-327.gif) (http://easyfreesmileys.com/)...never mind Spybot soon got rid of whatever it was.  Was that a Trojan?...I think that's one for Graham or  Terry.

hi Eileen

no that isn't a trojan. That type of bad software sends thousands of emails to clog up the recipient's system and deny them access to it. A trojan is a malicious piece of software that gets downloaded then sits there quietly until some event occurs (eg Friday 13th) and then does whatever damage it is designed to do - like deletes the whole hard drive. The anti-virus and internet security packages are now a must. The cynics like me believe that the comapnies who sell them write the viruses too....

Sad world really that these exist at all. If they all had an Arillas, the idiots who make them would not exist...

all the best
Phil

Thank you for the explanation Phil. Interesting point you made about the companies who sell the security packages....

Lindypops you are so right...I opened a door and allowed all these pesky poodinkies in!  It was most unlike me to open anything I'm not sure off...I don't know what possessed me on this occasion.  Dippy ol' moo that I am.

I don't know a great deal myself except that Phil was spot on, I believe some Trojans can also steal personal info from your PC and somehow get it back to the originator via email. I'm not an expert by any stretch though, I just buy the stuff that's supposed to stop it happenning. One question though......

Eileen, what on earth is a poodinkies? lol

I didn't have a single meal in the entire 10 days that I wouldn't recommend, but the ones that stood out for me were the Stamna at Thalassa, Kleftiko at Captains, and the Swordfish at Brouklis.
Just thinking about it is making me hungry. I guess its time to book my next holiday in Arillas just so I can sample more of the food.

Definitely the courgette kaftedes and Moussaka at the Brouklis.  Also, if they have cheesecake in their fridge, try that - it is devine.

Also, for breakfast and lunch, the Full English at the Marvel Hotel and Spaghetti Napolitana.  My really naughty recommend are the chip butties there - the best chips in the world!!!

Not been on for a while....(sorry) and really enjoyed reading this post.
My favourite food is the fried courgettes, followed by the grilled squid at Brouklis.
Also love the stuffed veg at Gratzella.
Really sad that will not be tasting it this summer, but made the decision to be back out in 2009, can't be without the place.
My kids love the swordfish souvlaki at Gratzella and of the course the gyros. My youngest loves the doughnuts from...........................Alex's.

I can't give a favourite, I've never had a bad meal at any of them. I have favourite restaurants, Horizon, Graziella and Brouklis for evenings, Mirage or Horizon for lunch. The Garlic prwns at Horizon though? I'm dribbling over my keyboard.

Just had dinner at the insanely underrated Grill Room next to the Malibu and Arillas Rent A Car.
Why are people walking by?  This was the dog's what's names!
A sensational meal at a very good price.
Get in there!

I agree Rick!   Stekis is very underated.  We go in there on the way back from the beach, or if we have had a busy day and just want to grab a bit to eat without donning the gladrags.  I always recommend it to families on a budget, the prices are just so reasonable.

My son would live on the grill room's Gyros pitta. Very underated but good none the less worth a mention. I only had one poor meal last year and it wasn't for the food the service was slow even so I've seen somebody on here has said it is their favourite. I think that my favourite is Horizon.

Stekis is just as good an eaterie as all the others are. Helen's Creperie and Ammos figure in this post too. They all offer really good food, at very low prices. Perfect for families with kids who don't want to spend a fortune. We have eaten at all of them, and can reccomend all three.

We tried most of the restaurants and did not have one duff meal. I thought the Kleftica at Mirage which is cooked in filo pastry was sublime and I also agree with the other posts about the Gyro pittas at the Grill room. As far as cost goes our most expensive meal for 4 of us was 68 euros but this included starters mains and desserts plus wine and a few soft drinks. The average was around 50 euros and always included a litre of red wine.
The only place we said we would not return too was Kavos, nothing wrong with the food but we found the service lack lustre and the fact that we were surrounded by tables of smokers puffing away whilst we were eating put us off. By the way I have no problem with people smoking that is their choice but I do find it inconsiderate when they light up in restaurants when other people are eating!

Kavos?  Do you mean a restaurant in Arillas, if so, where is it or the resort?

We loved Kostas on the Beach as our report says and the food was spectacularly good. We might have got special service because we were great friends with Adela, but like all eaterires out there, they can get very busy. You have to put up with that and just chill and take your time.

On the smoking theme, I understand the issue and as a smoker myself, realise what others feel. When we had a meal with 6 other non smokers at Tria Adelphia we left the table and went outside for a puff. But In an open area full of Corfu breezes to waft it away we deserve our little bit of space too...
