Oh dear. You have opened the floodgates lol. You will find many food recommendations buried in the forum but for what it's worth, my favourites are chicken souvlaki (chicken skewers) at portifino and the horizon hotel,  stifado (beef stew with shalots and cinnamon) at the Marina hotel, my ULTIMATE the succulent and amazing lamb chips as well as bifteki at Brouklis....oh I could go on and on.... You will be in heaven..

Don't know about Greek, but favourite Arillas dishes :)

Garlic prlawns at Efthyxia
Sea bream at Vavilas
Chicken Souvlaki at Night Owl
Spit roast lamb at Brouklis

You really can't go wrong, we have never had a bad meal anywhere, this will be our 9th visit in July and there are still places we haven't yet been to.

So many to choose from...... Right now. I'm thinking; Moussaka or Beef Stifado at Brouklis, Deep Fried Feta with Honey at Horizon, Feta in the Oven at Portfofino, Moussaka from Armourada, Greek Salad with white wine at Graziellas, all the restaurants are of a high standard in Arillas with a choice of authentic Greek food. I haven't had a bad meal at any of them. Part (a large part!) of my time there is spent deciding where to eat and what to have.

Sitting down at a table and being handed a menu in Arillas ....... I wish I was there now....

The forum often talk about the enormous choice of good food Denny. Here's one example, which will leave you with so many choices it won't help much!

Enjoy Arillas - it is quite likely to be the first of many visits.

Looks like we are going to have food fest trying these fab dishes that you all have recommended.
It really helps when going to tavern for first time and someone has enjoyed their meals so much.
We are looking forward to Arillias and trying all your favourite choices and finding new ones.

You are going to have a food fest, try everything once and then decide which is you favorite meal and restaurant then start again, the choice and styles of cooking is amazing. for something a little special try the Panorama or three Brothers in Afionas at sun set, simple family cooked food in a stunning location with views to die for.

What ever you decide where ever you eat and what ever you do, just go for it and enjoy Arillas.

Denny, if you add in Afionas (just next door, most beautiful village in Corfu, but uphill to walk)  it becomes an impossible choice. Add to Panorama and 3 Brothers the Night Owl (best chicken Souvlakia on Corfu) and Evdemon (wine specialists, recipes that launched Thalassa, views to die for) amongst others. Not forgetting Mon Amour in Kavaddades. They Kokkinos family will collect you from Arillas and bring you back, having provided an amazing meal in a family atmosphere.

I think Jen and I have now sampled everywhere, but it has taken 12 years.

Phil

Have to agree with Erja...too many fantastic dishes to be able to just pick out a favourite. It also depends on where and what time of the day it it. Absolutely love gyros pitta but only around lunchtime on the beach front. Also love different types of cheese pies and pastries but only for breakfast at the bakery...sitting outside with my coffee! The list could go on and on and on....oops mustn't upset the hubby. I also love his feta and tomato toasties but only for breakfast on the balcony!
We did enjoy our chicken soulvakis on the barbie at our caravan this weekend trying to capture Arillas...not quite the same but good fun anyway!

Congratulations. I agree they are delicious. Really messy - but worth it.

Bills record eating Efi's garlic pawns is a least twenty paper napkins for throughout the meal and three of those giant hand wipes....one for his moustache, one for his chin and one for his fingers. So I would definitely agree.....they are messy but gorgeous. Also love the ones at Graziella too but they are not quite as messy, but Efi's come out tops.

Sole meunière may not be a Greek dish, but it is my favourite, which I have been served at several Arillas restaurants. All were fantastic! (If I had to choose a winner, it would probably be the Horizon one.)
Of the Greek dishes, I love that most comforting of comfort foods, moussaka, of which all Arillas versions are great, all the mezes, the famous garlic prawns, of course, and Brouklis´ chicken souvlaki as well as their spit roast lamb, and all the mezes, and sardines with lemon, and all the mezes and...
For dessert: Greek coffee and five star Metaxa.
Favourite drink: Dimitris´father´s rosé. It tastes differently each year, but its most important quality is the tradition and the love that goes into it.

Jo they are the best......had them three times when we were there, and plan to have them three times more when we return in just over three weeks.

Three seems to be a favourite number for me!! pity we are only there for two weeks.

cannot wait for my first Greek salad of 2016 in July.  Has anyone managed to vaguely re-create this dish at home?
Title: Re: Favourite Greek dishes
Post by: soniaP on February 09, 2016, 10:41:55 PM
Yeah but never tastes the same. I think no matter how well you recreate any Greek dish it just never tastes the same. I think it's the lack of sun, view, Arillas people and even the air.
Title: Re: Favourite Greek dishes
Post by: cypress on February 09, 2016, 10:47:49 PM
Nope Jo. I've tried to recreate it and it's about passable. Even with the best quality ingredients/feta/oil available it's not a patch on the sun soaked, Corfiot composted, home grown tomatoes, cucumber and onions, organic oil, locally made Feta of Corfu. Even though I do keep trying. Not long now ........

I'm not particularly keen on tomatoes but the Greek ones are out of this world.
