Title: Beach of 2018
Post by: Jo Wissett on January 31, 2018, 03:50:29 PM
I am really hoping that we can a lovely wide beach again this Summer.  It was simply superb last year.  I used to love sitting there with a glass of wine as the waves started to glisten beautifully early evening, watching all the Greek families enjoy some precious family time, all ages together having fun.  Deep sigh...

Hi All
Has the beach been washed away?
The sea looks nearer our bench than last year!
I wanted to insert a picture but don't know how.

The size of the beach for summer visitors is generally determined by what happens in the spring. The storms can bring sand in, or take it away depending on which direction they come from ( - ask Dimitris - he's an 'expert' on these things) so I shouldn't worry about it at the moment 'cos it can literally change overnight.

Do not worry for the beach. - About 7 days ago I was in Arillas , after an overnight storm , and all the kelp on the beach was not a pretty sight. The next day, after overnight bad weather, all was OK and the beach looked very well indeed. - Now that 'ole kelp n seaweed is back but this is not a problem for all here.
Those super switched on locals will clear what nature leaves behind. - Twill be a pussycat by May.
Cheers

Hoping for a lovely wide beach too, not that we tend to sit on it (not a fan of sand!!) but it's nice to look at! :-D  SO looking forward our visit in July after missing last year due to trips elsewhere.

We tend  to go down later in the day, where the rocks are to the left of the pier, just for a quick swim before a shower and drink before dinner.  Mike prefers the pool.

Any updates on the beach, as I saw some pictures on Facebook & it looked full of sea weed. Be nice to have a wide one like last year, the South was the best its been in a while

The beach looks beautiful on the webcam but we usually use Dimitri's sunbeds the other end and so it would be great if anyone has any recent photos to share.

Sorry I am useless at uploading photos but can report that sadly at the moment the beach is very narrow.  It has been a bit stormy the last few days which hasn't helped. We spent today at the south end and passed the gratsela the beach was wide enough for about 10 beds. This afternoon the water was up to the wall under the gratsella.
The main beach in front of the marina along to the marinaki is also very narrow. There are 2 rows of beds in the morning but by mid afternoon these are stood in water. Those wanting to go to the far north nudist beach are having to wade through about 2-3 feet of water.
The sea us deeper too & this means the waves are bigger. Great fun on the air bed today!

Thanks for the update Karen
That's such a shame but I suppose we were really spoilt last year. We're not going until 20th July so time for some improvement. However, we will love spending time on there whether it's wide or not!

After a storm the other night the beach was noticeably wider today. At dimitris end it was at least 10feet wider & The sea was back to its usual calm state. We are currently sheltering in kostas though  from another storm x

We arrive a week Tomorrow and if the forecast for the UK is right will be leaving behind a heat wave!!

Looking at the forecast for Arillas it's possible the weather may be slightly better at home but we know where we would all much rather be!!

Looking out of a window at beautiful weather whilst working is no joy - Much rather be in Arillas any time......

Couldn't agree more Neil & Gill. According to the weather forecast on this website forecast rain Monday and Tuesday. Looks like swimming in the pool in the rain is likely - still beats being at work.

I agree that there's nothing worse than being at work when the weather outside is georgous!
However, the weekend for-cast  in England does look an absolute scorcher and as much as I absolutely love love love Arillas there's nothing worse than spending your hard earned money on a holiday to be welcomed by rain! We have enough of that at home all year round.
Looking on the bright side ...the rain never lasts very long in Arillas especially at this time of the year. I'm sure you'll soon be waking up every morning to glorious sunshine.

We got caught out in the rain again yesterday just walking back from San Stef. Soaked by the time we got back to the marina.
We hired a car today & it was a scorcher.
Still we had a nice mooch round Kassiopi & a lovely evening at the Anemos in Afionas with Spiro.

Although the weather in Arillas isn't too good at the minute I was wondering if it's affected the beach in any way? I also hope  the weather isn't spoiling your time there especially knowing that we're experiencing a heatwave here in England. However it's absolutely awful having to go to work in this hot weather and makes you appreciate how difficult it must be for all the locals in Arillas having to work in such hot weather ensuring we all have a great holiday!

Thank you to all the people of Arillas.
Hope the weather picks up for all the holidaymakers who are there at present

We were hoping to go on the beach today but the weather is still warm but overcast. Expect the sea will be chilly tho. As the weather hasn't been good we've done a lot of walking. We will get on the beach so etime this week I hope.

According to the weather forecast, it'll be cloudy in the mornings today and tomorrow, clearing up in the afternoon, then glorious sunshine from Friday onwards so you should be able to get at least a few of hours on the beach if not today, then tomorrow.
 Enjoy, whatever the weather. xx

It was our last day on the beach in Arillas yesterday. The sea was very cold. Couldn't go in above my knees!. As the day went on the sea reclaimed a lot of the beach again & when we left his morning the beach was significantly smaller. Although as we saw over the last few weeks this can change overnight.

The beach is a lot narrower this year but it was very windy yesterday so that might have brought more sand. Not been down yet today to have a look but I think overall it is fair to say that it is not going to be as wide as last year. I think it is still fantastic.

Beach Point/Ammos/Portofino all have 3 rows of beds & access to North Beach as it was last Year with no wading required - Until Yesterday!!
Strong winds brought the sea up below the beds nearest & up to the cliff.point at North Beach.
Wind was forecast.for Today  too but as I sit typing it is just a breeze - Beach noticeably narrower though.
As it.changes almost daily I guess it is almost impossible to predict how wide/ narrow it will be for those arriving later - I'm sure.like us though you'll make the most of it.

The beach is looking great on the webcam. Probably not as wide as last year, it's difficult to tell. Nevertheless it still looks extremely inviting!

Just a bit of a gripe. On our last day of holiday it was very windy so we decided to pay for a fixed umbrella on the beach as it was too windy for the portable ones. We eventually decided on the ones in front of Portofinos. It was 10 euros for 2 sunbeds and an umbrella. They are very comfortable with thick padding and sturdy wooden beds. There is also a fixed table in between. The cost included a bottle of water brought nice and chilled in a cool bucket and 2 actual glasses rather than plastic cups. Brilliant. However, the lady that runs these was extremely irritating. She first of all asked us a million questions about where we normally sat on the beach (had been going down near Gratselas as quieter), why we normally did not go down that end etc. Demanded we go to her in future. She also kept coming up to us and slagging off Ammos' sunbeds saying they were dirty and were not safe in the strong wind etc. I must say that I found her very irritating and it put me off hiring sunbeds from her again.

Things like that annoy me too Sonia...so unprofessional!

We usually use Dimitris sunbeds towards the north beach but if for any reason we couldn't then I'll keep that lady (rather not lady, more like rude person) in mind

one more sleep

Jill & I are beach people and as much as we love staying at the Mathraki find it can be sometimes too stifling.

We always used to bring our own "brolly" & lay on sunbeds but find it a little uncomfortable now in our "older Age" (Sorry Jill) so opt for the comfortable beds in front of Ammos etc.

Previously always opted for Ammos but this Year Portofino beds are the same so gave them a bash and was greeted by Sabrina who we came to love - I admit she does like to question but we gave as much and enjoyed it - We never ever found her rude or offensive and she certainly never dismissed any competition to us - Anything we needed she was always there - Sonia perhaps you caught her on a bad day?

I must admit though that we found the waiter in Portofino a little abrupt when we tried for lunch - Never went back & stuck to Beach Point!!!

Wish We were still there!!!!

Yeah she is quite a character Neil and although I found her irritating as trying to relax and she was a bit too in our faces, I would have gone back up until the point of when she then started to slag off the competition. Didn't like that.

Arrived back today and the beach is absolutely amazing again this year almost as wide as last year. Beautiful!
We also used to take our own mats and brollies but the past couple of years we've had to resort to hiring the sunbeds. We used Dimitri's beds just to the right of Kaloudis, for the 3rd year running. He's a lovely bloke, so friendly and helpful. It's a lot quieter than the main beach and more spacious, even though none of the beach is noisy or crowded. However there's no wifi at that end which doesn't bother us but you can soon pick it up when you head up to any of the tavernas.
We just love that beach and missing it already
