Thinking about next year before we've even been this year!!! Looking at early May to be there for Martin's birthday. When does the season start? Have been before in very first week of May, perhaps a bit early? Does it depend on Easter celebration? Any info much appreciated thanks, Gerx

we always go in may we have been the first week well the hole of may still nice and sunny with sum rain but next yr we are going in june for two weeks keith and ann

We are usually out in May,(second & third weeks) quite a few places are open and others well into the process of getting ready to open.
Brouklis, Amourada, Gratsella, Marina, Kostas, Beach Point were all open this year when we arrived. Vavillas, Thalassa, Horizon, Effies, Portofino, Mirage, See Breeze Amos were also open by the start/middle of our second week. with the tour operators flying out the first week of May.
Malibu was open and Coconut open during the evenings.
May is a fabulous time to arrive with spring flowers and cooler days and nights. The weather can be variable but usually any rain soon passes
Just relax and enjoy Lazzzyyyy Lunches and wonderful Dinners

We have been in early may before and the fireflies are truly amazing! Just wondered if greek easter had any affect on how early places were going to open, we would like to bring 2 newbies with us and want them to have the full arillas effect!!!

Brilliant, something to look forward too.
-
I didn't believe they could be as amazing as all of the posts on here claimed they were ...... I was wrong ! :-)

My son is going 19th may for a week staying at Mathraki. He has been to Arillas once about 6 years ago when we went as a family and now returning to show his girlfiend what a great place it is. I am so excited for them. He will also be there for his birthday on the 24th and where better to celebrate your birthday.

No where better, Ness! I am so looking forward to the fire flies or fairies as I will be pretending they are to my granddaughter!
-
We do the same Cheryl....

When are the fireflies around in May as I would only be able only go at the end of the month - beginning of June which is when the schools have a week off?

Usual the first 2 weeks in May, we have seen them later then that. They are small carnivorous, nocturnal which emit light during the courting season. The mails fly around after dusk, and although the females have wings they are flightless. they both emit this fantastic green light. They feed on snails and worms so therefore help the farmers as well as being an Amazing sight. x

We have to go school hols as well Suzy and have always seen them late May
-
I have been told they can be seen anytime in May, depending on a certain crop, what that crop was I just cant remember? Maybe the Boss will know, x

Thanks folks!
May is out this year as we're in Elounda crete for a week (more expensive for 1 week than for 2 weeks in Arillas at the end of July!) this is purely down to it being over a bank holiday weekend...such a rip off!
I shall definitely try and see the fireflies end of May 2018...sound amazing!

Suzy, we were in Arillas during the second half of May last year, and saw the fireflies.
They were as lovely as expected, but we had not known that they BLINK!

Fireflies do not definitely BLINK. - Their ass just continually switches on and off.
And..... do you know they are carnivorous?? This is why nature brings out wasps during the day and fireflies at night.
(Wasps are carnivorous too)
Can you imagine the "firefight" if both species met each other??
Negg

Eggy,
Fascinating stuff, biology!
Emeralddragon

Even more fascinating if you were surrounded by both species.
You wouldn't know whether to watch the fireworks or treat the stings!!
Negg
anyway ...... off topic so whoever comes in May has to run the gauntlet of Negg or just accept the fact that I may bend yer ear at some point.

See you then.....we will be at Mathraki. Arriving afternoon May 5th, ready for ear bending.

Val n Bill...
.... "Boy oh Boy" .... may yer ears be bent much more than they have ever been bent before!!!

In Arillas early in May,
a visitor stops and says "Hey,
I see lights that go ´Blink´,
must have had too much to drink,
for the signal they send is ´Mayday`
