Title: exchange rate
Post by: briant on May 10, 2008, 08:34:51 PM
having compared rates on the net,the best i saw was 1.2416 fromwww.travelmoneyservices.com on contacting them they told me that the longer notice date you gave resulted in a better rate.I have ordered for delivery on 27 may and got a rate of 1.2472 commission free as the order was above £500.Hope this is of some help.

Hi Everyone
Wish I'd known that information, Briant, yesterday.  Changed £560 into euros at the post office and got a rate just over 1.18.  She said the rate dropped from 1.21 to 1.18 yesterday.  However in Lincoln today, the Coop were still offering 1.21, so it pays to shop around it seems.
Never mind - will just have to economise on the Mythos next week.
Best wishes

Hi Everyone
Thanks Riggers and Lindypops for your comments.  Yes going short on Mythos was a bad idea - never mind I'll think of something.
At least by going to the post office in the village I'm helping to keep it open, and it was only a short walk, and there was no queue, so perhaps it wasn't a bad deal at all.
The ticker it ticking down nicely so it won't be long now.
Best wishes

Does anyone know how many euros I can get to the pound in Arillas. I'm not sure whether it's better to shop around at home, or get traveller's cheques and exchange them in resort. Last year I didn't change my leftover euros back to pound, and they're worth about 15% more now.

I've tried to get me head around this Euros malarky.

Am I better off taking travellers cheques and some euros, or
No travellers cheques and all euros, or
English money and change it in Arillas, or
All travellers cheques, or
Any other solution.

Please, please someone help, I need advice, quick.

Many thanks

I will take about €800 and then use my debit card. I haven't used travellers cheques for years, too much hassle.

Amanda, I've been thinking long and hard about this one too!  I think I'm going to take about 100 euros with me, take some sterling and change it there and also hoping to be able to withdraw from the ATM.  With the info provided by Eggy, even when you've paid the commission, the rate is still higher in Arillas and changing it there is better for the local economy.  That's the plan at the mo, of course if the rate goes up over here, I may take all euros with me!  Sorry, I don't think I've helped you at all!

hi amanda, i think we are going to take some euros and some sterling to change up when we need it and a debit card as a back up! i never take travellers cheques, as they are too much hassle, and somewhere like arillas there is no problem with security anyway!

Title: Re: exchange rate
Post by: garythebike on May 20, 2008, 10:29:23 PM
Hi Ger.
The obvious place to start would be Temple Bar, it's Dublins west end but be warned it's very touristy. There are several pubs that host do's (comedy, bands etc) and most have some form of entertainment. The good bit is the size of Dublin, most places are walking (staggering) distance or a short cab ride. Be careful late at night and stay in a group, Dublin has lost some of it's innocence since joining E.U. You'll have a great time anyway. Enjoy !

thanx for your prompt responses.

My only concern about using the debit card Terry is what if the machine in Arillas doesn't work, we'd be left without cash and the nearest one after that is Sidari.

Amanda
Title: Re: exchange rate
Post by: TerryW on May 21, 2008, 01:51:48 PM
I usually keep a minimum of €200 and top up at the cash machine. If the machine is not working I will have enough money to keep going for a few days. I could also use a card to pay for meals etc if I needed to.

Amanda, if Stuart and yourself were needing to get to Sidari or elsewhere for any reason, you would only have to ask for Helen or myself at the Horizon and we would take you. And that goes for any other people who are in Arillas at the same time. It would be very sad if we communicated most days, here on the forum, but could not help a fellow forum member with any form of holiday emergency.

I am going to do a 50/50 split euro/sterling and see how it goes.

I think the forum gives a fantastic insight into what Arillas is like, and we like what we are reading !!!!

We like the quiet resorts (always Greece though, because of the people ) and this is why we picked Arillas, although I dont know if Arillas will be ready for our 3 year old daughter !!!!!

Only trouble we had this year using the ATM was that our cards got blocked!

After seeing Watchdog, we informed our bank of our holiday dates and where we would be.  Apparently, people had been finding that their banks were blocking their cards while they were out of the country as a security procedure regarding unusual activity.  Watchdog advised to tell your banks where and when you are going, but they did also add that, as banks are computerised, sometimes even this isn't enough.

On our first week Colin's card was blocked in spite of his having notified the bank, but mine worked fine.  Then in the last few days of the holiday my card became blocked, so in desparation Colin tried his card again and hey presto, it worked!

(Admittedly it would have been a good idea to take the little card we were given by our bank with the telephone number to ring should there be any problems.  I left it by the computer on our desk! derrr.........)

Yes there seems to be a bit of a problem if you are using your card at the ATM.
Do the banks take notice of what you tell them.
Whilst we were over in May our son tried to use his, he had informed his bank prior to traveling. when he tried to use the ATM he was denied.
He contacted his bank and was informed that they had tried to contact him to see if his card may have been used in Greece.
Yes it had he replied, I have informed you that I would be using it whilst on holiday.
He then informed them that as they knew he was on holiday why did they telephone him at home to see if he was using his card whilst he was on holiday?
Next thing you know they will be charging him for the telephone call????

Hi Jo,

I know this isn't quite what you asked, but in terms of banks - I'm with the HSBC & have never had an issue with the ATM in Arillas.
I let them know when I'm away & where I'm going to be & it was really, really good - no problems at all to report.

I can tell you however that staying above the Brouklis & being very near to the ATM machine, I heard a few people who were strolling by (after attempting to use the machine) that didn't appear to have had a lot of success - maybe it's all the different foreign cards that are being used all at once?!?

I don' really know, but it's always been spot on for me & for Christian who's with the Nationwide.
Hope that helps Jo?

We are with the Clydesdale Bank and to be honest it has never even crossed my mind to inform my bank that I would be using the card abroad.  I've never had a problem in Arillas or elsewhere.

Although once, a few years ago when I was in Spain, my branch called me on my mobile to confirm it was me using my card.

I hope I've not just placed a jinx on my card.....

I'm sure you haven't placed a jinx Eileen - but I know what you mean. I sort of feel the same way too!

I've never previously felt the need to inform my bank about being abroad & as I mentioned, have never had any problems with the ATM in Arillas & have to say got a much better exchange than was on offer in the UK before we left to come away.

The reality is that the Euro exchange isn't getting much better is it?

Still, I doubt it will stop us all from coming back eh?

I decided to take traveller's cheques, and change them in Arillas, for what I expected would be a better exchange rate. It was so; 1.20 to the pond in the UK, compared to 1.24 in Arillas. HOWEVER, I had to pay 2% commission in the UK, and yet another 2% commission in Arillas, so I was no better off. Last year, in a larger Greek resort, with perhaps a greater range of banking facilities, I got my cash commission free. Arillas proved worth the extra few euros though!

I got some Euros this weekend at M&S and took advantage of their £10.00 voucher when you exchange £250 or more. I did £250 on Saturday and £250 on Sunday and Helen had £20.00 off her clothes. The £10 back gives an exchange rate of about 1.257.

If she buys more clothes next Saturday, I will get another £250 exchanged.

Yesterday was e1.252 and the commission on any money changed is 2%.

I think, with the two busiest months looming, that it may break the  e.1.26 barrier.
( But I've got all the Euro 2008 results wrong, so far, so what do I know? )

The Barclays Bank account, we used to have in the UK,offered us commission free euros and Travellers cheques plus free holiday insurance plus a few other perks.
( I think we paid £5 monthly for alll these privileges )

So we always bought T/C ' s with us and changed in Arillas.

In my daily life I run a jewellery wholesale business and our suppliers are mainly from Germany and the U.S. The strengthening euro has had a dramatic effect on our prices in the UK but likewise it is having an adverse effect on exports from the Euro zone. I visit Germany regularly and they are not at all happy with the strength of the euro. I am also in weekly contact with currency dealers and the consencus of opinion is:-

1 The euro is currently overvalued and there will have to be a correction.

2 The correction will not take place in the next few weeks!

Unfortunately we are all at the mercy of speculators and like everything else in life at the moment we have got to grin and bear it. At least I can look forward to a relaxing 2 weeks in Arillas.

Hi Eggy

It looks like the european central bank will put up interest rates today - this is already having an effect on the euro - it is getting slightly stronger against the £! I did notice in our local Thomas Cook that they are offering euro's at 1.24 to the £ but you have to spend a minimum of £500.

My advice is shop around as travel agents are struggling and will probably do a deal on currency exchange.

Hi Negg

Could well be. If you follow this link on the BBC website it gives live data on exchange rates.
 http://newsvote.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/fds/hi/business/market_data/currency/11/12/default.stm

These rates are spot rates and are more closely related to commercial transactions. However it gives a good indication of where rates are going.

Oh well, we got just about 1.21 yesterday (before I celebrated and got absolutely like the back end of a small rodent...)

Thomas Cook was the same rate, but went to my own bank branch and they handled issues like card limits etc.

Have taken out a Nationwide Flex Account, but as usual with jen and me, too late for this trip. Will help us in September though. Thanks for the advice Sandy. In September we can spend the few euros we save on some extra Black Russians...

Hi All,

I went to Thomas Cook last week and told them i had been offered 1.225 by First Choice, small white lie, they then offered me 1.23. They also had an offer if you put over £500 on a cash card loaded with Euros you get an extra 25 euros on top of what you put on the card.Apparently you put this into an ATM and draw euros out and it only charges 2 euro per transaction (max 700 euro a day). Not bad considereering you get 25 free.

We'd love to welcome you both Lynn. But both is the point.....

Eggy was having a "senior moment" as we both call them. He and I are good at those. It can't be the ouzo, because I rarely drink that. It must be our junior age!

Wikipedia says a white russian is equal measures of vodka, coffee liqueur and cream. Jen and my version consists of cold milky coffee and loads of vodka. We often drink that. We don't worry whether they are black or white though. Just like the rest of our attitudes.

Take care both, and see you in Arillas one day soon

Title: Re: exchange rate
Post by: Eggy on August 26, 2008, 05:36:48 PM
Lyn

It's still e 1.257 today and expect a 2% charge for exchange which gives you around a e 1.232 mark. This is for cash and Travellers cheques.
But if you already paid commission  on your T/C's then dont expect many euros extra just peace of mind that you are exchanging when you need the cash and a good feeling that you are exchanging with local Arillas businesses.

Just got 1.22 for a "clearance sale" at First Choice. Had to be in 100 euro notes which are unpopular and they wanted to get rid of them. Shame theye didn't just give them away... Their ordinary rate was 1.18, but Lloyds bank was 1.20 all with no commission.

So it looks like most of our exchange will be while we are there, on our Nationwide FlexCard.

Near where I live is  a company called 'Cheque Centre Currency' they also have an internet site by the same name, well today they are selling at 1.219 to the £. If you go to some of the larger travel agencies they will match other local prices, so when I need a few euros I just quote the CCC prices and have always had it matched, by a few I mean about £100s worth. Normally I wait untill I arrive at my holiday destination.

I think the exchange today is something like e1.15? What's happening folks?

There's more n more talk of one euro to a pound here. I know nothing of economic polictic etc but, if v.a.t comes down from 17.5% to 15% the extra money people can save for "special treats" can be easily consumed by the exchange rate when people need a well earned break.

Spare a thought for those trying to "live the dream" Not Egg n Wegg, but those halfway though building projects. I know some who have now put their builds on hold in the hope the exchange improves.

A e200,000 quote for a house in Sept 07 was around £142,000 - Now it's £174,000.

Frightening times people.

I've got my own Conspiracy Theory on this one.
The government will allow the £ to slip so close to the Euro that when they suggest that we might as well change to the Euro since it is worth the same as the £ then there will be no resistance from the voting public.

I don't think yer far wrong on that Geoff!

Numbers can boggle the mind as well. If 2.5% is one seventh of 17.5% and one 7th is 14% of a 100 then taking one 7th off the euro now gives us around e1.06 ?

Getting closer to the pound every day.

Do you think any Governent members know something we don't and sunk their £'s into euros when it was around 1.49 in June 07?

mmmm?? I think you might have a point Negg, but if you ask a Politician you know the answer will be "Well YOU may think that, but I can't possibly comment" :-)
All I know is, I bought my plot of land in Drachmas, and wish I had been able to pay for all my house to be built then. The way things stand now I'll be lucky if I can ever afford to TOTALLY finish it - thank goodness it is at least in a liveable condition so I can retire to it if the current economic climate forces me out of work sooner than I expected.

I watched BBC news this morning.

"Pound hits all time low against Euro"
" 72p this time last year - now 87p"
" Holidaymakers hit hard"
" Talk of WHEN it becomes pound per euro? "

Now, is the best time ever to show your support for Arillas or indeed any of your favourite destinations. Don't let the poor exchange deter you from your holiday break!

Are we now being dictated to as to where we take our holidyas? Are there cunning plans afoot for the UK to sneak the euro in? Does it bother those MP's, some of whom who find time to doze off in the Commons, and who earn so many extra coffers each year. The exchange doesn't affect them as much - Does it?

I'm sure it will take more than this to keep all "Arillas Addicts" away from yearly dream!
I can forgive the Government for many things but.... take away my Arillas Forum freinds for next year and....,,,,. Guy Fawkes 2 may be on the horizon!

Cheers

I agree Negg, frightening times indeed. I am one of those people you refer to - in the middle of a build.  When we purchased our plot in May 07 the exchange rate was 1.48. We too thought about putting the build on hold, but we could be waiting months, even years for the euro to recover & at the same time building material costs are rising, so we have decided to ' bite the bullet' & carry on with our dream. Our villa should be ready by next May [ although the dreadful weather at the moment is causing some delay ] So watch this space,  because it will be available to rent.

Brown Sold 415 tonnes around $282.40 per ounce and is today $829. Losing $546.6

So thats $80 Billion dollars of our money. Only saving grace being at the current exchange rate thats only £53457009144.

Eggy - "Maybe with the strong Euro we'll see Greeks buying land in the UK now?"
--- I trust this was sarcasm Negg.?? From what I know of the Greeks they are neither stupid or masochistic, only a complete fool with a desire to suffer would trade Corfu for the UK.
As for the Euro - TV new last night showed one Bureau de Change in the UK offering 1.01 - but there were no commission charges!!  - (now that IS sarcasm) :-)

Me? - Sarcastic?
What I meant was that the Greeks could buy land in the UK and build. Then they could rent to those people who, sadly, can't get a mortage!
( OK yer right! )

But... and we struck a little lucky here, when we transferred some cash over in June 07 and got e1.48. I've been trying to work out how much profit we'd make if we took 3000 euros home and then changed into sterling?
I think it's something like £780, after commision? - Is that right?

Title: Re: exchange rate
Post by: Geoff on December 12, 2008, 05:05:35 PM
Eggy - I think you are just rubbing our noses in it now. Yes, you lucky old *** you could make a fair bit if you did that. Of course, sell back rates are always worse than buy rates, so you would probably have to part with more that 1.08 Euros for each £sterling. The Post Office is quoting 1.2141 as their buy-back rate on their website today - But its commission FREE !!
But given that 3000 Euro would have cost you about £2027 at 1.48, then even if you sold back at 1.2141 that's £2471 so you would make around £444
Of course, it would be very unfair to mention "Rip-Off Britain", but isn't funny how a commission free product would actually make them £282 (their Sell Rate is 1.0898)
I think you might be best keeping it in Euros mate!

We have our own CONSPIRACY THEORY!  I always thought it would come down to almost £1 a euro soon.  Its always been expensive to go on holiday in the UK now (not much value for money) & I am sure it will be the same to go abroad soon.  We will be shipping in the sand and swimming pools in our own back gardens soon (for our usual 2 months of good UK weather if we are lucky!) if we cant afford to go abroad.:-)

The govt. keep trying to put a plaster over an old wound but don't know the cure for all the financial problems... once the initial panic has calmed down a bit I am sure it will all go mad again and the VAT will go back up higher than before, petrol will sky rocket and we will have 50p to the euro.  Aren't I a happy bunny?

The people at the tax office told Mike to cash in his private pension as he has lost so much money on it.... she said it is worse "out there" than people actually know and realise.  Not a happy time for a lot of people at the moment is it?  Quite depressing really.

I know Mike and I would rather be living in Corfu though despite the financial crisis.

Hi All!
All this financial talk is sooo depressing.
The way I look at it is 'its only money'. What are the alternatives. Sit at home, go on holiday in the U.K. and pay over the odds and get dubious weather or go 'home' to Arillas where we know we will have a good time and the weather to match! No contest!
The latest figures show that those with moderate saveings are now moving out of the U.K. to destinations abroad. Thinking of joining them myself. This mob in government or the alternatives, seem to give it all to those who have already enjoyed themselves by getting into debt both in the personal and corporate fields, leaving the prudent high and dry!
Ill get off my soap box now. At least we havent been 'euronated upon' yet! Can they adopt the euro without a vote?

Martin.

Well Martin, we are in debt but certainly did not "enjoy ourselves" getting there and I resent the implication that it's all our own fault!! The reason is, we run a retail business and people have stopped buying. The so-called 'help' that the government are giving to small businesses is of little use to us!
I hope you enjoy your next holiday in Arillas . I suppose it's too much to ask of you to spare a thought for those of us who can barely afford to buy any Christmas presents, let alone book a holiday.

I have been there, got the badge, the T shirt and the mug. I am retired on a small pension and having raised my family and put the three of them through uni without any help. Just when I thought things were improving we all have been placed in this viscious circle of declining interest rates and worry. My daughter has her own business and I know how hard she has been hit by it all.

I think we are all entitled to a bit of a moan now and again.

We are in the process of sorting out finances for my mother in law recently widowed and I never knew what a minefield it is out there for benefits etc...how much one benefit relates to another etc..all based on NI payments and savings. She didnt even qualify the for £2,000 bereavement payout, her widows pension is taken into consideration I was told, they dont tell you that in the small print!   Apparently there are millions unclaimed benefits for those widowed etc but I can understand why as its so complicated and might seem a waste of time as it can take 12 weeks I am told, so what do you do in the meantime if you have no money.  So far they have all been very helpful and good but it has "opened my eyes", we are just grateful for the help they can give and have facilities to do so... but for how long.

As Mike is self employed and has lost some big contracts at the moment our holiday bookings are on hold for that reason and also because we are looking out for mum now and cant look that far ahead yet.  Might just have to wait for a last minute and go when we can.  It wont be as cheap for us as it has been the last few years I fear.

Things never stay the same and we would be silly to think so, who knows what the next 6 months will bring.  It will probably get worse like it did before-  bulk buying loo rolls soon!  Perish the thought of stock piling loo rolls again, mind you I couldnt bear the thought of not having any!  What else was everyone stockpiling?  I remember butter (why?)

You do have to have some sense of humor in all of this.

I so agree BG

Quote
You do have to have some sense of humor in all of this.

Our plans have been dramatically altered by the economic situation and in particular the exchange rate. We feel so sorry for those who like Eggy said, are in the middle of building a dream in Arillas and find not only the cost of living in UK heading skywards, but also their build in Corfu. We never planned to build initially, just rent and pay for it with the rent we get on our house here. But even that looks dicey for 2009, so we sadly recognise 2010 is more likely. I have taken part time work starting January to bolster our finances. But I am the lucky one - there will always be students at College and work for me.

We will be in Arillas next year whatever it takes. At the moment 3 weeks in July looks most likely, but like this year we will grab whatever comes along. We managed six weeks this year and want to do better than that next. But at 1 pound = 1 euro, it is just a dream.

But like BG says - Jen and me will keep smiling, keep loving, and keep laughing.

Hi All,
We just have to 'hang' in there and brave the financial blast. Hope it doesn't last too long.
Just had a 'phone call from Dorita at the B.S. hotel confirming my booking for 8th. May 2009. Gone up to €100/week which is still good value considering the state of things. They are all concerned about the exchange rate too.
Blondegirl, I know what you are saying about benefits and dealing with getting what you are entitled to! When I lost my Ann, there seemed to be a maze of forms and nobody seemed to want to help! I only found out about berevement benefit some three months after, more by luck than anything else. One tip. When it comes to filling in that 'deceased tax return' form, it used to be 28 pages of absloute c..p, if you go to your local tax inspector they will usually go through it all with you and fill it in as you go. There are so many boxes that don't apply. One thing I leaned in the process is that nobody will, or seems to be able to advise you on what you can claim for. There are no leaflets or guides. It seems if you are 'signed on' as a 'job seeker' or  already recieving benefit you will get assistance, the rest of us are left to wade through it unguided!
Angiem, the end of a 'perfect' day syndrome! Hope things get better for you. Here's to a prosperous 2009!
Lets all think of Arillas, warm sunshine, good company, good food and peace for a couple of weeks! Wont make it all go away, but it helps.
Yammas,
Martin.

I've just heard from a customer of mine, in the UK, that agreed to buy a lovely plot of land, near Arillas, in September when the exchange was e1.27. Her sale has now gone through and she got e1.01. She has to wait now to build her funds for a build.

She now would love to sell a third of it to fund her build. A good opportunity for those who would like an 800/900 metre area to build a house. And a bit cheaper as it would have a shared access etc, etc.
You don't see under 1000 square metre plots for sale so this could be a good deal for someone.

Sorry to use this as a little advertising but, when you're involved in somebodies dream that starts to turn sour you must do all you can to help.
PM's only if interested and I will put you in touch with her.

On another note, just thought of, I wonder how the poor exchange will affect Appt owners linked with Tour Ops? If a tour op pays an appt owner a set fee for all rooms for the season surely this means they are now paying more euros? I'm not a financial wizard but if 77p bought 1 euro and now 98p buys 1 euro will Tour Ops put pressure on these owners to take less as they are paying more?
Will hoilday prices increase yet again. - The mind boggles.

Does that mean that prices will increase or they try and negotiate for a better deal?

I think the general perception in the City is that The Euro overshot a little and this is a correction. However some of the pundits are saying that we can expect 90 cents to the pound in years to come.

At the moment our interest rates are still higher than the states so people are still converting to Sterling to bank here.

I dont ever remember feeling to gloomy/scared for the future of our economy.

Im glad we bought our flights for the start of the season so nomatter we are coming out this year. We found Easyjet flights from Bristol in October for about £70 return but in honesty I havent got the heart to book them at the moment. Going to have to wait and see.

Guilty (thats wiv a G as well) It was this Geoffrey that made the comment - but I log in as Geoff as only my Mother calls me Geoffrey when I have been a very naught boy!
I can't believe that was for real though Eggy - unless of course it is simply property investors who are buying now while prices are low, with a view to selling when prices go up again, which they surely will, but my guess would be that it will take several years to turn a profit on such an investment. As for holiday homes in the UK - good luck to you if that's the kind of masochist you are - me? I'm staying with Corfu!!

Hi Geoff

We keep an eye on this one as well.

Cheers from a very wet Corfu morning and temps at 9 deg.

Time to go off for an Ouzo. I remember when it cost me £1.60 in June. Now it's £1.83.
Good job they give us very large measures though and after the third the price doesn't seem to matter at all.

You'll have me crying in my 99p per pint in Weatherspoons next Eggy!!  Ouzo doesn't taste the same in minus weather temperatures so it's stones ginger wine and a drop of whisky for me.

I might have a ten euro note hanging about from last August if you are open to offers on the house? Anywhere near North Devon? Woolacombe in particular and I could be tempted to up the offer:)

Have a good night at the darts

When I was thinking of it as £45 that was acceptable now I am thinking of 70 quid! I want to change it.

Generally it's about the same as the bank rate and not the tourist rate which, I think, keeps it 1or 2 points ahead.

Next time I'm in the Bank I'll have a look.

I am off working from at the moment due to a hernia operation, but I did receive this information and it is from a reliable source.

"HSBC Treasury, seem to be as much in flux as we are as regards the rate, the comments though are:

a) US Dollar - They see this in quarter 2 being at a rate of about 1.58, going to 1.61 for quarters 3 and 4.

b) Euro - They can see some strengthening of the pound, but are giving a figure of about 1.10, but if rises above 1.15 consistently , they can see it rising to 1.20."

I hope the above is true but no matter what the exchange rate is in July, we will still have a wonderful holiday in Arillas.

Title: Re: exchange rate
Post by: Eggy on April 12, 2009, 02:27:59 PM
Steve

The exchange in Arillas is always better than in th UK. Something like .03 last year
( eg - e1.070 in UK then e1.073 in Arillas )

It makes a difference if you can get UK commission free T/c's or bring cash.
But if you have to pay a UK commission then an Arillas commision you break about even.

Most of us like to give the trade locally and it's fun "playing the market" when here as you can change if it increases a bit more than it was when you left the UK.

And.... there is always a Nationwide account as a back up. There's a "hole in wal" in Arillas where you can use this, and other cards. No commison paid with Nationwide and, I think, a better exchange than the UK.

Hope that all makes sense.
Cheers

As I advised Forum Members some weeks ago ,a rate of 1.1408 was available commission and delivery free from TMS provided amount was £500 sterling.I have just recieved delivery but  will be using them in Can Picafort in June as Belfast is priced out of the Corfu market at the moment.I,m sure that sometime in the future things will even out and we,ll be back in Arillas. In the meantime for those of you still able to make the journey havea great time Hasta La Vista Briant

Nationwide Foreign Transactions
Nationwide continues to offer commission-free foreign transactions. By commission-free we mean not adding any additional charge for the service of exchanging currency that generates profit for the Society.

When you use a Nationwide Visa debit card or credit card to make a transaction in certain currencies other than sterling, Visa charge a fee for each transaction and Nationwide currently pays that fee on your behalf.

We will start to pass this fee onto you from 6 May 2009 on credit card and from 1 June 2009 on debit card and it will be included in the sterling amount shown on your statement.

The fee is currently 0.84%. From 1 July 2009 this fee will increase to 1%.

We changed some sterling in Alpha Bank at Acharavi this morning and got e1.094 less their 1% commission.

Crown Currency exchange's offer of e1.32 is, in my opinion, a good sign that the euro could be around that figure in June.
( Although it would be a major leap in a short space of time )

Sorry Amanda, thats the official rate on the BBC website, under business and market data. Im not lucky enough to be in Arillas at the moment, but found last year that the lovely guy at the Marina Hotel gave a great rate, or was it because he was so pleasant? I find whatever the official rate is in the UK the rate in the resort is closer than any highstreet trader in the UK.
